This was on display this past weekend at Summerville HS as a number of area AAU travel teams converged on the home of the Green Wave for two days of exciting basketball at The Fire House. Last season was an exciting time to be a Green Wave girls basketball fan as the team earned a berth in the 5A championship game.
We at Prep Girls Hoops also made the trip to Dorchester County for Saturday’s festivities. Here are a few upperclassmen that caught our attention.
La’Tavius Wilson La’Tavius Wilson 5'8" | SF Manning | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Manning HS – Team USC Cross – It was up in the air if Wilson would be available for Team USC Cross at Summerville. Her travel team had to be pleased that she was available. Wilson is listed at 5-foot-8 and is versatile in where she can find playing time. She can either operate in the backcourt as a guard or as a small forward. Wilson bolsters a team’s offensive output in addition to bolstering a team’s rebounding output. She is poised to be one of many rising seniors throughout the Palmetto State that is sure to close their careers at the high school level with an exclamation point.
Lauren Thomas Lauren Thomas 5'8" | SF Cane Bay | 2023 State SC – Cane Bay HS – TMP White – Being at the Green Wave’s home court, Thomas was participating at the rival school of her high school that she plays at. She primarily plays in the frontcourt as a forward and her defense frustrates many an opposing team with as many steals as she compiles. She stands at 5-foot-7 and helps a team’s rebounding efforts in addition to putting points on the board. Thomas will also display her talents as a ball distributor as well as on the defensive end with blocking shots. Prep Girls Hoops last saw Thomas with the Cobras at Dawn Staley’s team camp at UofSC.
Asa Snyder Asa Snyder 5'7" | SG Porter Gaud | 2023 State SC – Porter-Gaud HS – TMP Black 17U – It was only last week when Prep Girls Hoops saw Snyder in her Cyclones colors at a high school team camp at Cathedral Academy in North Charleston. Defensively, she can match an opposing ball carrier step for step and plays every defensive possession with a heads-up attitude. Snyder is also an efficient ball distributor and is confident in her ability to connect on her 3-point attempts. She will also attempt midrange jumpers, can set up her team’s halfcourt offense and will assist on double teams as a defender. Snyder also has defensive stands where she keeps her hands and arms outstretched. SCISA’s reclassification will have Snyder and the Cyclones in Region 3-AAAA this upcoming season.
Yasmine Cook Yasmine Cook 5'8" | SF Stratford | 2023 State SC – Stratford HS – Lowcountry Premier 17U – Cook tallied the first points of what was an entertaining matchup in the latter part of Saturday’s action between her team and TMP Black 17U. She went on to score some more – along with grab a good bit of rebounds. She also managed to deflect passes and disrupt her opponent’s passing lanes. She also is unafraid to draw contact and put herself in position to convert on her free throw attempts. Another element to Cook’s game is her versatility and that she can play productive minutes either as a guard or in the frontcourt – primarily at the four.
Darnaishia Goss Darnaishia Goss 5'10" | C Stall | 2023 State SC – Stall HS – Lowcountry Premier 17U – Goss makes sure her team never gets dealt a loss. She is listed at 5-foot-11 and one of three forwards on the roster for her travel team. Goss can make plays near the rim and never gives up on a play – particularly in the painted area. She plays the game on contact and will take her chances at the free throw line. Goss also is a skilled rebounder and wins many a battle on the boards. She averaged a double-double in 2021-22 for a Warriors team that finished 17-8 (5-3 in Region 8-AAAAA) and she is poised to eclipse and outdo her junior performance in her swan song at Stall.
Talasha Walker Talasha Walker 5'4" | SG Stall | 2023 State SC – Stall HS – Lowcountry Premier 17U – Speaking of talented Warriors that comprise the Lowcountry Premier 17U roster, she is one of the four from Stall that is on the team. Walker stands at 5-foot-6 and boasts an offensive skillset that includes a knack for the 3-point shot. Defensively, she will deflect passes and affect the passing lanes of an opponent. Walker is a runner – as in she will find her way through defenses en route to the basket and can find herself at the right place at the right time to gather steals and create extra possessions for her team.
Kennedy Rivers Kennedy Rivers 5'5" | CG Philip Simmons | 2023 State SC – Philip Simmons HS – TMP Black 17U – Last season was a banner one for Rivers as she achieved an individual milestone by reaching the 1,000 point plateau for the Iron Horses. She got to that plateau in part because of her proficiency from deep – which she showcased once again at Summerville HS. Rivers gets herself in position to grab rebounds and has a knack for turning those offensive boards into two-point putbacks. She stays one step ahead of whoever she is guarding and that attribute enables her to prevent easy layups as a defender. Rivers is also unafraid of contact and will take her opportunities at the free throw line.
