This week marks the beginning of the July “live” periods, and more than 100 teams from Indiana find themselves South of the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky, for the Run 4 Roses tournament. Action actually began on July 4th, but Indiana teams didn’t begin play until Tuesday, July 5th. To follow are five ladies who I thought stood out for one reason or another with their play when I was able to see them.

Always 100
Black 17U
– Eva has been a consistent performer throughout her career, but I always enjoy her open-floor style of play during the grassroots months. She is a strong, but very athletic wing who plays with an outstanding motor. She can attack the basket and create for teammates, but she also finishes through contact inside. Her perimeter jumper has steadily improved over the years, making her tough to defend, plus she willingly defends with effort and is a nice rebounder from the perimeter positions.

– Maddie has been a key piece in the Brownstown Central lineup since her Freshman year. She has good vision and can deliver passes on-time/on-target, whether in traditional offense or during transition traffic. She has worked on her strength over the years as well, plus she has always been a dangerous shooter with some range. She shot the ball well Tuesday in her opening matchup, and she made a number of hustle plays, helping the Sharks nearly pull one out against a tough Kentucky squad.

– I have seen Shena a number of times at showcases over the last couple of years, but this was my first time seeing her in the comforts of her grassroots team. She is extremely long, fluidly athletic, bouncy, and she has gotten stronger. She is starting to shoot the ball very well from the perimeter, and with a little range. She has also turned herself into a very nice defender. She can guard the ball, affect passing lanes, and she rotates to “help” fairly well and consistently aids teammates.
Emma Hart, 2024, 5-2 PG, New Castle H.S., Indiana Elite Phoenix 17U
– Emma has dealt with her share of injury issues over the past couple of seasons, but filling in for this Phoenix team, she looked solid at both ends of the floor. She has some quickness to her game, a nice handle, and she runs offense well and with a natural feel for the game. She also showed the ability to knock down open jumpers from the perimeter. I’d expect for her to be a major headache for Hoosier Heritage Conference opponents during the 2022-2023 season.

– Sophie had a big offensive game Tuesday, scoring 27 points in a variety of ways in their opening round win. She finished strong inside, earning a couple of and-one opportunities, she knocked down shots from the perimeter, but she also created for others and found open teammates. Sophie has really nice length, fluid athleticism, and the ability to affect the offensive end of the floor in a number of ways. As she continues to develop her defensive game, look for her to be more of a wing than a forward.
