This tournament features a lot of talented players who are operating under the radar. Here is a look at some New Names of players that caught my eye during the weekend.
Sarah Angel (E Sparkz): The 2023 combo guard from Community R-6 was one of the most impressive players that I watched during the weekend. It was my first time seeing her play and she was fun to watch. She is a serious bucket who can score from all three levels. In her first game, she came off the bench and scored 10 points in about a two-minute span. She was flipping up short jumpers on the run, knocking down mid-range shots and hitting the 3-pointer. She also has a good feel for the game with the ability to pass the ball.
Jilian Aholt (Blackout): A 2023p point guard from Father Tolton who has good speed and quickness along with a nice feel for the game. The lefty dropped some nice dimes and she displayed an excellent stroke from 3-point range. She hit four triples in the one game that I watched here. She is also a ball hawk on defense who applied very good on-ball pressure.
Angela Mostek (I Quest): A 2023 guard from Kirkwood who had some electric moments shooting the ball during the weekend. The lefty sniper turned around one game I watched by stringing together four 3-pointers in a three-minute space to turn a double-digit deficit into a lead and eventual victory. Her shooting range was extended well beyond the 3-point line. She also had a nice pull up jumper from the mid range and she was effective on the two-foot jump stop in the lane.
Laniya Starks (St. Louis Cobras A.N.M): A 6’1″ 2024 forward from Lift for Life who did a nice job of controlling the boards on the defensive end. She gets good position and she is good at getting out of her area to corral rebounds. She is also a good shot blocker with her height and length. When she caught the ball in the low post, she displayed some impressive footwork along with the ability to score with both hands.
Mara Jensen (E Sparkz): A 5’11” 2023 forward from Van-Far who is physically strong and she knew how to move people around in the low post with her positioning. She established a good base inside and she can catch the ball and score very effectively. I was also very impressed with her ability to pass out of the post. She also dropped some nice dimes to open cutters from the high post.
