Scoring points with the clock stopped are valuable anytime. However, it’s especially significant when a team attempts to cut into deficit late in games.
Mckenzie Snook
The Chariton sophomore led all sophomores in 3A with 15.1 points per game. Snook also led all sophomores in 3A in free throw attempts last season. Most of the action that involves Snook occurs around the basket. The now junior nearly averaged a double-double last season in points and rebounds but ended with 0.3 rebounds short of ten per game. Snook likes to attack from the basket from the mid-post area and constantly puts pressure on defenses, which leads to her drawing fouls.
Ella Scharar
The Cadet led sophomores in 3A in free-throw percentage, shooting 83% from the free-throw line. Sharar is a 6-foot wing who can score from the perimeter or interior, which gives her an advantage because she can exploit mismatches. When the Cadet attacks mismatches, she can earn plenty of easy points by drawing contact around the basket. The Cadets may not have been competitive in the North Central Conference, but if Scharar can get to the line, even more, they could be more competitive.
Ava Packebush
After a solid sophomore season, Packebush showed she could get to the line and convert free throws. Okoboji was a team who finished around .500 last season and played in a handful of competitive games. Having a player like Packebush coaches trust handling the ball in her hands and making free throws are valuable late in games. She’ll need to do even more next season now that Montana Wilson finished her high school career. However, if the Pioneers are competitive, they will like their chances to close games out.

The 6-foot multi-sport athlete is an athletic wing who makes plays on both ends of the floor. Her size and athleticism create problems for opposing teams because there aren’t many good options to defend her one-on-one. Johnson was one of the top-ten sophomores in free-throw attempts in 3A last season and converted 70% of her shots from the line. Going into her upper-class seasons, I like that she can finish games for the Lions and be switchable defensively. She is an excellent wing that will help her team win games due to her physical tools.
