Continue ReadingIn a couple of weeks, the 2022-2023 season is set to begin, as more than 90 teams from all over Indiana have their first games set to take place on November 1st. With that said, who are the best teams in Class 2A for the 2022-2023 season? Below I have attempted to answer that question as best as possible. This preseason outlook is based solely on how I think teams will stack up this season. Past success isn’t meaningless, but year-in and year-out rosters change, players graduate, Freshmen arrive, and other players transfer. Teams can slide up or down the competitive scale for any number of other reasons as well. In Class 2A, that can be magnified even greater, as just a player or two can shift the balance of power in the state tournament.
CLASS 2A PRESEASON POLL
1. Winchester (24-2, Regional Finalist in 2021-2022)
Winchester has been one of the most successful programs in Class 2A over the last 16 years, though they did spend two of those years in Class 3A due to their success. In that time, they have won 12 Sectional titles, two Regional titles, and they’ve been the Class 2A State runner-up twice. This year, they return a very nice, experienced roster, with a number of Seniors leading the way. Gena Moore (9.6p, 3.0r, 2.1a) and Haley Lanter (9.8p, 5.6r) did leave via graduation, so there are some decent-sized shoes to fill there. Back in the fold, however, is one of the state’s best Seniors in

could be primed for a big year. She has gotten a little stronger, but she is extremely long, fluid, and she can step outside and knock down perimeter shots as well. 5-7 Senior guard Nevaeh Lanter could serve as a secondary ball-handler to Campbell, but she too has the ability to score it a little from each level. 5-4 Senior guard Zoey Craw and 5-7 Junior guard Avery Mote should be able to provide additional experienced depth. The Lady Falcons aren’t nearly as tall as in years past, however they have strong guard/wing play, and the ability to switch defenses while spacing you out at the offensive end of the floor.
2. University (23-5, Regional Champion in 2021-2022)
The University Trailblazers just became IHSAA tourney-eligible during the 2005-2006 season, and from 2007-2012 they won four Sectional titles, two Regional titles, a Semi-State title, and finished as the state runner-up in Class 1A in 2008. After a bit of a lull, they have recaptured that success over the past five seasons, claiming four Sectional titles and three Regional titles, the last three seasons of which have been spent in Class 2A. Looking ahead to this campaign, University returns a great deal of experience, talent, and skill, plus they welcome some youthful talent as well. Senior wing

Seay is a power wing, she can handle the ball at times, and she’s a nice downhill scorer. DuBois is a nice sized forward/post who can establish herself on the block and dominate, or handle, pass, and shoot it around the perimeter like a small forward. Senior guard

3. Forest Park (26-3, Class 2A State Champion in 2021-2022)
Forest Park had a magical 2021-2022 season, capped by the Class 2A state championship. There was an idea the Lady Rangers would be good last season, but I’m not sure even they saw such a deep run in their future around this date a year ago. Regardless, they have now set themselves up to be one of the best teams in the state once again, and they could very easily meet University a second consecutive year in the Class 2A South Semi-State. They knocked off the Trailblazers back in February, 53-44, and the teams are very close in talent once more. Replacing graduated guard Ali Welp (9.7p, 2.4r) will be the first task for Forest Park. She gave them athleticism, good perimeter shooting, and Senior leadership. At the same time, the current Senior class for the Rangers is strong as well. Senior forward

(8.6p, 2.6r, 3.5a) brings good size and strength in a ball-handling role. She can also score it from all three levels, and I’d expect a bigger offensive output from her this season. 5-9 Senior guard Gabey Gray (4.1p, 3.8r) is another experienced veteran in the lineup, and she could find more scoring opportunities this season with the loss of Welp. 5-5 Senior guard Danielle Eckert (1.9p) and 5-8 Senior forward Alivia Gehlhausen (1.4p) show how truly deep this Senior class is for Forest Park, giving the Rangers an experience advantage over most of their opponents.
4. Andrean (21-7, Regional Finalist in 2021-2022)
Andrean was one of the best defensive teams in Class 2A last season, while also playing a Top-5 schedule of all Class 2A teams. However, a big part of that defensive presence was graduated forward Lauryn Swain (6.0p, 4.8r). While her stats may not have been gaudy, she was vital in a number of games, protecting the basket at an undersized 5-7. Moving forward, the 59ers will need to find a defensive replacement, but offensively they have their top three returning scorers, all of which are scholarship level prospects. Senior guard

She has an athletic frame, she moves effortlessly around the floor, and she is a shot-maker/scorer from all three levels. She very easily could double her scoring this year. 2022 graduates Bridget Sherman (2.4p, 3.5r) and Sarah Morley (1.8p) weren’t huge stat-producers, but they were experienced and provided depth a year ago. That will need to be replaced. 6-0 Sophomore Maddie Walton (2.6p, 3.7r) has a great deal of talent and potential, so she could be that person to step up this year. 5-11 Senior forward Emily Ziegelhofer (1.6p, 3.0r) and 5-4 Junior guard

5. Central Catholic (24-5, Class 1A State Runner-Up in 2021-2022)
After making a one-year cameo in Class 1A and advancing to the State Finals once again, Lafayette Central Catholic is back in Class 2A this season. But this year they must play without the graduated Karsyn Cherry (10.8p, 7.9r, 5.1a, 3.6s) for the first time in four years. She was incredibly versatile and added athletic talent to the backcourt. Caitlin Dineen (8.9p, 2.9r) also left via the diploma, and she gave them another versatile wing with multilevel scoring ability. Back, however, are Senior guard

(2.6p) saw the most action of the remaining returnees, and both will likely start this season. From there, a number of underclassmen and newcomers will battle to provide depth for Central Catholic, and at the fast pace they like to play, depth will be key to their success. However, look for the Lady Knights to once again be a threat to make a deep tournament run.
6. Carroll (Flora) (18-8, Sectional Champion in 2021-2022)

(16.2p, 7.0r, 3.4a, 2.5s) is a hard-working, physical wing, but she also has great touch around the perimeter, and she’s a solid North/South driver. She will come up with a number of hustle plays for the Cougars. A third Junior, Laney Johnson (9.3p, 4.6r), is a 5-8 wing who can also score the ball when open, and she could help alleviate pressure from Harness and Wagner with a strong season of her own. 6-0 2022 grad Maryn Worl (7.3p, 6.0r) was a productive interior presence who will be missed, and Carroll could have a tough time replicating her production inside. But 5-10 Junior front-liner Jamilah Tillman (3.4p, 6.7r) showed nice promise a year ago, and she could be a bigger piece of the puzzle this time. 5-3 Sophomore guard Sarah Jones, and Seniors Allison O’Brien, a 5-9 post, and Daizee Myers, a 5-6 wing, each saw action in more than 20 games last season, so that’s where the Lady Cougars will likely look to build their rotation depth this year.
7. Eastbrook (19-3)
The Lady Panthers tend to play with depth, balance, and defensive toughness, and this year should be no different. They will be without their second, fourth, and sixth leading scorers from a year ago, but they could be even deeper this year due to the experience gained by a big 2024 class. Those missing are Kristin Goff (7.8p, 5.0r), Lily McLaughlin (7.3p, 3.3r), and Johwen McKim (4.5p, 2.4r, 3.5a, 2.8s), however Junior guard

(12.5p, 2.3r, 2.0a, 2.2s) has already been chased by opposing defenses for two years now, and her transition into more of a point guard role has seemed to find her more touches and cleaner looks. I’d expect for her to be one of the better guards in Class 2A this season. 5-6 Junior wing Olivia Howell (7.6p, 4.3r) began to step up last season, and she’s the person most likely to show immediate improvement in productivity without the 2022 graduates around. 5-7 Junior forward Sehdah McKim (5.5p, 3.9r) is a nice run-and-jump athlete who plays with a good motor. She will bring toughness and a defensive presence to the frontcourt. From there, 5-7 Junior guard Kortney Goff (4.0p), 5-9 Sophomore forward Mia Bustos (2.9p, 2.8r), 5-6 Junior guard

(2.7p), plus 5-4 Junior wing Estah McKim (1.0p) all look to make their mark on the program, trying to fill open roles this time around. With Winchester leaving Sectional #39, look for Eastbrook to be the favorite there this season.
8. Triton Central (19-5)
Since the 2011-2012 season, the Lady Tigers have been incredibly relevant in Class 2A, winning eight Sectional titles and two Regional titles in that span. However last season, in a mild upset, Triton Central fell to Eastern Hancock (below) in a 3-overtime, Sectional Semifinal thriller. Gone from last season are Olivia Faust (13.3p, 6.0r, 3.4a, 2.6s) and Maia Harris (3.3p, 4.1r), but the Lady Tigers manage to return an experienced and deep roster, looking to win Sectional #42 once again. Triton Central welcomes back 5-7 Senior guard Jenna Cox (2.9p, 3.5r, 4.0a), who was injured midseason but served as a primary ball-handler up until that point. 9. Pioneer (21-5)
Following two straight State Finals appearances in Class 1A, and a state title in 2021, the Lady Panthers moved to Class 2A last season due to their success. They found it slightly more difficult, as Carroll (Flora) was in their Sectional and knocked them out, 66-61. The 2022 Indiana Junior All-Star and Ball State University commit has managed to score 937 points and hand out 214 assists, despite playing only 23 games during her first two seasons. She looks to replicate a strong Junior year and keep Pioneer in the hunt for some Class 2A trophies in 2022-2023. Missing, however, is Hailey Cripe (18.3p, 8.7r, 2.8a, 2.6s). She was huge in their prior success, but the graduated guard is now playing softball at the University of Kansas. Looking to provide help for Brooke this year will be the combination of 5-9 Junior forward Kylie Attinger (6.1p, 6.0r), 6-0 Junior forward Brooklyn Borges (3.6p, 4.6r, 2.2b), 5-6 Sophomore guard

While the Lady Panthers have some size and solid frontcourt play, they could definitely use Strycker and any of a number of younger perimeter players to step into much bigger roles this year. Whether or not they can find more perimeter production to offset the loss of Cripe will be critical in their success.
10. Eastern Hancock (17-7)

Junior guard Sammie Bolding (12.8p, 2.2r, 2.1a, 3.3s) is an athletic presence and was actually the Royals’ leading scorer a year ago. She creates havoc defensively and can score it from all three levels.
