Statistically, these are some of the best returning players in 4A and do multiple other things to help their team win. Not all these players are traditional forwards or centers, which is surprising to me, but let’s meet these four.
Andrea Lopreato Andrea Lopreato 5'9" | SF Mount Pleasant | 2023 IA
The 5-foot-10 junior from Mount Pleasant contributed to every aspect of the game for Panthers last season and was near the top of a few different statistical categories in 4A. Somehow the Panther managed to nearly average a double-double while doing most of her work on the perimeter. 9.9 rebounds per game is an incredible feat, and it tells you how competitive she is as a person. She could’ve “coasted on a team who wasn’t competing at the top of the conference, but she did everything she could to help her team stay competitive.
Brooklyn Love Brooklyn Love 6'1" | PF Waterloo West | 2024 State IA
Last season, Love averaged 9.4 rebounds per game, but that only tells part of the story regarding Love’s game. The 6-foot-1 forward had a dominant season around the basket as a whole. She blocked 4.9 shots per game and altered countless more around the rim. That level of dominance around the basket is insane and will earn her interest from the next level soon if she hasn’t gotten some already.
Ava Locklear
The Clear Creek Amana forward is slightly undersized as a forward, but she plays taller than her height would suggest. She owns her space, boxes out well and plays with maximum effort all the time. The Clipper also was excellent at ending the opposing team’s offensive possessions with blocks, steals, and rebounds. That also translated to the offensive end of the floor. Locklear shot over 50% from the field and grabbed a few offensive rebounds every game. Locklear is a solid two-way forward that makes winning plays on both ends of the floor.
Ella Bockenstedt Ella Bockenstedt 6'0" | PF Marion | 2023 State IA
The six-footer is a skilled four or five who scores from anywhere on the floor. I love the number of moves she has with her back to the basket, and she may not be the strongest kid at her position, but she knows how to play to get the best out of her skill set. She uses her length to alter shots and rebound around the basket and to take jumpers over contests of her defender. I think she has more skill than most believe, and her length makes her a factor around the rim.
