Continue ReadingDuring the Christmas break, I thought I would take a look at some of the current college freshman who landed in our rankings from the Class of 2022 and how they are doing at the next level. These are the players who landed at a non-D1 school. How have they adjusted? Enjoy this read!
Claudia Harrington, Covington (Muskingum)
Claudia was a Watch List player in the final 2022 rankings, and has stepped into the college game and has played very well. She is averaging over 30 minutes per game as a starter for Muskingum and is their leading scorer at 14 ppg. She is also averaging over 6 rebounds per game while shooting at a 50% clip from the field. Really great start for the former Covington Buccaneer!
Jada Pohlen, Hamilton Badin (Wilmington College)
After a great career at Badin that saw her help lead her team into the regionals, Jada (ranked #71 in the final 2022 ranking) is now a freshman at Wilmington averaging just over 20 minutes per game. She is averaging 8 points per game and scored 12 points off the bench in their last game against Earlham.
Hailey Unger, Arcanum (UC Aiken)
Hailey was ranked #12 in the final 2022 rankings, and chose to attend UC Aiken where she has played in all 11 of her teams games with two starts. She is averaging just over 19 minutes per game and scoring just under 6 points per game. Her big game so far was 13 points vs Carson Newman.
Kalista Friday, Monroe Central (Defiance)
After finishing her high school career ranked #65 in our rankings, Kalista went off to Defiance where she is averaging 6.7 points per game with 2 assists per game. She is playing right around 20 minutes per game. Defiance is 5-5 on the season and while they are a team who has started all upperclassmen this season, Friday has provided quality minutes as a freshman.
Emma Dretke, Jackson (Walsh)
Coming off a great career at Jackson, Emma has been a solid newcomer at Walsh, a team sitting just one-game under .500 at the Christmas break. She has been a starter since day one and is averaging 24 minutes per game and is scoring at a rate of 7 points per game. She has made a good transition to the next level.
Carmen Heuker, Botkins (John Carroll)
She was underrated by most “experts” in the game, but landed at JC and is averaging 26 minutes per game and while is not averaging a lot of scoring, she is doing her job with the basketball. She had four assists in her last game against Mount Union. Playing in the tough SCAL during her high school days had to prepare her for the competition she is playing now at the next level.
Bailey Shutsa, Harrison Central (Mount Union)
She was a solid player during her high school days, finishing her career ranked in the top 70 of her class by PGH. Her first year in college, she has started nine of her teams 10 games and playing nearly half of the game. She is averaging 4 points per game.
Catara Dejarnette, Kenston (Tiffin)
Ranked #43 in the final 2022 rankings, Catara (feature photo above) landed at Tiffin where she has enjoyed a nice first year of college basketball. While not scoring like the high school level, she is contributing at a nice pace of 7.7 points per game while playing just shy of half the game (17 min/game). Like any freshman, the adjustment period is always tough but she seems to be doing well and contributing.
