Player of the Tournament: Sabine Brueck
Sabine Brueck, 5’8 G – North Country Union High School Class of 2025
Since preseason, Sabine has been one of the most impressive and consistent players in the state, and there’s been no hiccups. Naturally, it seems, she continued to showcase her versatility and two-way capabilities at MMU’s winter tournament. Brueck is quite possibly the best perimeter defender in the state with her length, IQ, anticipation, and agility. She’s constantly taking the other team’s best offensive player and giving them fits. Moreover, she turns so much of that defense into offense. She put up 23 in the championship victory over BBA, outscoring them herself in a 43-21 finish. Sabine creates easy scoring opportunities, rarely forces anything, and doesn’t need to dominate the ball to get her numbers. What more can you ask for? She’s on a tear.
Cora Nadeau Cora Nadeau 5'9" | SG North Country | 2023 State New E , 5’11 G/W – North Country Union High School Class of 2023
The senior leader for NCU had a relatively quiet tournament scoring wise by her standards, but nonetheless, she impacted the games without needing to score. Nadeau took up some tough defensive assignments this tournament as one of the taller players for NCU, taking on MMU’s rugged frontline in their first game. Against BBA she continued to handle some forward responsibilities, such as clogging the paint and cleaning the glass. In the end, Cora’s not merely a scorer and her willingness to adapt her game is evident. Moreover, she makes plays for others when opponents overcompensate to limit her production. Cora can do a little bit of everything.
Cherise Shamp, 5’11 G/W – Mount Mansfield Union High School Class of 2023
MMU may have had some holiday woes in their hometown tournament, but regardless, Cherise provided much needed numbers in the face of two tough games. With 18 points in the first matchup and 26 in the second, Cherise got buckets. Shamp attacked the rim per usual, both out of the post and from the perimeter, getting finishes at the rim and collecting free throws. But more so, it’s Cherise’s effort defensively and on the glass that stuck out. She’s a relentless rebounder, using her length and will to collect boards. And she fronts the press for MMU, corralling ballhandlers into traps, collecting steals, and deflecting passes. Shamp is MMU’s swiss army knife.
Breya Montague Breya Montague 5'9" | SG Essex | 2024 State New E , 5’9 G – Essex High School Class of 2024
As EHS’ primary ballhandler and playmaker, Montague carries a lot of responsibility. I get the sense that she welcomes that role. Breya provides Essex a steady diet of facilitation and scoring. Montague has really nice vision, which she put on display with tightly threaded passed through MMU’s zone and in transition. In addition, Breya is able to score in numerous ways. She gets to the rim often, especially on the break. Yet she can also stroke it from three and the mid-range. Breya’s defense is measured and anticipatory, and her sneaky length allows her to bother shots and passing lanes while keeping a little space to bump slashers off their line if they drive. Montague’s two-way production is key for EHS’ success.
Neveah Camp, 5’8 G – Burr and Burton Academy Class of 2024
The biggest stock riser from the tournament was Neveah Camp. Camp showcased her ballhandling and orchestration for a BBA team that is thin with ballhandlers. She handled on-ball pressure well with timely advance passes and savvy dribble moves to evade traps and beat defenders. Additionally, she got to the free throw line often due to her intent on attacking the rim, and she converted her free throws at a high clip. Furthermore, Neveah is a gritty player in general. She gets on the floor to collect 50/50 balls and scraps defensively. She feels like an x-factor type player for BBA.
