Sabine Brueck, 5’8 G – North Country Union High School Class of 2025
At MMU’s Holiday Tournament, D2 NCU walked away with two quality wins over D1 opponents. Sabine led NCU with her typical services. Brueck was locked in on defense as she took opponent’s best wing players out of their element with her off-ball denial, active hands and agile footwork. Offensively, Sabine dropped 19 against a gritty MMU team and then answered that with 23 in the closeout victory. Brueck’s ability to turn defense into offense is uncanny, and when she’s out in transition she taps into another gear which leaves defenders in her wake. She’s also been hitting her threes at an efficient rate. Sabine is rolling to start the year.
Cherise Shamp, 5’11 G/W – Mount Mansfield Union High School Class of 2023
MMU may have come away from their home tournament 0-2, but Cherise was clearly one of the most impactful players of the tourney in her own right. Shamp led the tournament in scoring, putting together an 18-point performance against NCU and a 26-point evening against Essex. Yet, her point totals are only a sliver of the story. Shamp rebounds at an insanely high clip, notching double-doubles and near double-doubles every time on the floor. Additionally, she’s an efficient free throw shooter and gets to the line quite often. And defensively she’s a hawk, capable of guarding 1-4 as she picks up all 84 feet. Cherise is tough.
Maia Jensen, 5’8 G – Mount Abraham Union High School Class of 2023
Reigning D2 champ, Maia showed exactly why Mt. Abe made their championship run last March. Jensen produced a 12-point, seven steal performance early in the week. Which she followed up with a 21-point outburst against U-32. Maia often fronts Mt. Abe’s full court zone pressure where she does a fine job corralling ballhandlers into traps and jumping passing lanes. Naturally, she creates a lot of offense out of that defensive pressure for herself and others. Yet, in the halfcourt she shows nice off-ball spacing and is apt to attack defenders with quick decisions. Jensen isn’t one who needs to dominate the ball to produce her three-level scoring output.
Breya Montague Breya Montague 5'9" | SG Essex | 2024 State New E , 5’9 G – Essex High School Class of 2024
The driver for EHS, Breya put together two nice games for Essex this past week. Montague delivered a 17-point performance in a tough loss, yet she answered with a 15-point game in a hard-fought road game against MMU. Breya is the orchestrator of EHS’ attack. Her vision allows her to pick apart defenses and set teammates up with easy finishes. And off the ball, Montague moves well into defensive gaps where she’s likely to knock down catch-and-shoot looks all over the floor. Defensively, she rotates well and utilizes her length and anticipation to cut off driving lanes and jump passing lanes. In addition, she creates havoc in EHS’ full court press, which produces lots of offense at the rim. Breya has led the charge for EHS in December.
Yvonne Roberge Yvonne Roberge 5'6" Spaulding | 2023 New E , 5’8 G – Spaulding High School Class of 2023
Yvonne led D2 Spaulding to two solid wins against D1 opponents this past week. Roberge put together a solid performance against Burlington High School, taking on one of the state’s top point guards and containing her production to keep BHS on the ropes all four quarters. She followed that up with a 16-point performance against BFA. St. Albans. Roberge is a pass first point guard, but that being said, Yvonne can fill it up when called upon. Roberge gets to the rim to finish and set others up, especially in transition. In addition, she’s a catch-and-shoot threat from 20 feet and in. Nonetheless, Yvonne doesn’t force her offense and seeks to get others rolling in order to open the game up. Roberge and Spaulding are off to a good start.
Anna Moser Anna Moser 5'8" | CG Rutland | 2026 State New E , 5’6 G – Rutland High School Class of 2026
The freshman had her fingerprints all over RHS’ two victories this past week. Moser put up 19-points and four steals against South Burlington, producing half of her teams scoring. She followed that up with a 13-point performance against a tough St. Johnsbury team chock full of experienced guards. Anna exhibits a lot of poise, even as a freshman. She handles on-ball pressure with composure, navigating defenses with her tight handle and crisp passing ability. As a scorer and playmaker, Anna can finish at all three-levels while also harboring the vision to set teammates up. Defensively, Moser is as gritty as they come. She hustles extensively, has nice agility, and is simply hungry. You can see pretty quickly that she loves the work.
