Continue ReadingNow that we’re going into Week Five of the High School Basketball season in New Mexico, there is several teams that are starting to hit their stride before the Christmas Holiday. Week Four was full of more exciting matchups from around the State and this upcoming week has several more intriguing non-district matchups across New Mexico. This week’s matchups will take place from Monday December 19th to Saturday December 24th.
Tuesday December 20th, 2022:
La Cueva (3-2) vs Volcano Vista (9-1) at 7:30pm
This will be the second meeting this season between the La Cueva Bears and the Volcano Vista Hawks. It was the Bears who won the first matchup on the road vs the Hawks by a score of 52-40. That win snapped Volcano Vista’s 46-game winning streaks that lasted for two seasons. That is still the only Hawks loss this season and they haven’t lost since by winning their last five. The Hawks will be led by their Star duo Taejhuan Hill Taejhuan Hill 5'11" | C Volcano Vista | 2024 State NM and Mila Espinoza Mila Espinoza 5'4" | CG Volcano Vista | 2025 State NM who combine for 31.1 of the teams 61.3 points per game. Taejhuan Hill Taejhuan Hill 5'11" | C Volcano Vista | 2024 State NM averaged a double-double with 10.7 rebounds per game. The Bears will be led by their Star back-court of Eva Love Eva Love 5'9" | SG La Cueva | 2024 State NM and Jordyn Dyer. Eva Love Eva Love 5'9" | SG La Cueva | 2024 State NM is averaging 12.8 points per game and Jordyn Dyer is averaging 12.2 points per game as a freshman. Will the Hawks get revenge on the Bears for snapping their 46 game winning streak on Tuesday Night?
Wednesday December 21st, 2022:
Valley (6-3) vs Atrisco Heritage (4-2) at 7:30pm
Both the Valley Vikings and Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars have gotten off to fast starts this season. The Jaguars are led by Janessa Gallegos Janessa Gallegos 5'2" | SG Atrisco Heritage | 2024 State NM who is averaging 16.8 points per game which is inside the Top 20 in New Mexico. The Vikings are led by Giana Roybal Giana Roybal CG Valley | 2025 State NM and Iliana Aragon who are both averaging just under 10 points per game. Both teams are solid defensively and don’t surrender a lot of points to the opposition. This should be a hard fought matchup.
Thursday December 22nd, 2022:
Monument Valley (AZ) (6-2) vs Farmington (9-1) at 6:00pm
The Farmington Scorpions will be traveling to play Monument Valley in Arizona this Thursday evening. They have won nine of their first 10 games and their only loss came to the defending 5A State Champion; Volcano Vista Hawks. The Scorpions will be led by their “Big 3” who are all Anitielu Sisters. Kapiolani Anitielu Kapiolani Anitielu 5'10" | SF Farmington | 2024 State NM is averaging 18.3 points per game, Kamalani Anitielu Kamalani Anitielu 5'6" | PG Farmington | 2023 State NM is averaging 12.3 points per game and Kjani Anitielu is averaging 11.2 points per game which accounts for 41.8 of the teams 59.4 points per game. They are one of the states best trios, and compliment each other well. If theres any team that can travel outside the state, Farmington is one of them.
