Hartsville also won a close contest with Darlington and Waccamaw matched up against Carvers Bay and Hilton Head Island held off SCISA power Beaufort Academy.
Another contest that also occurred that night was one that emanated between 3A Orangeburg-Wilkinson and 4A Wilson. The matchup, which featured a younger Bruins squad than last year’s with three seniors, and a Tigers bunch looking to improve, proved to be entertaining from start to finish, but coach Cedrick Simpson’s Bruins got the better of the Tigers with the final tally being 47-42.
Not Over ‘Til It’s Over
Not only that, the victory for Orangeburg-Wilkinson was of come-from-behind fashion as the Bruins trailed the Tigers by as much as double-digits in the second quarter. Wilson had a lead of 14-8 after one frame and a 28-21 advantage going into halftime.
Primetime Performers
Leading the charge for the Bruins was the No. 12 that will likely be the program’s future in the coming seasons. Joliyah Robinson finished with 14 points. She delivered a couple of 3-pointers (the only triples the Bruins made all game) that were critical to the Orangeburg-Wilkinson comeback effort and some fourth quarter free throws that were key in holding off the Tigers.
D’ivona Rumph, the team’s freshman six-foot big, tallied 12 points for the Bruins’ cause.
Venia Haigler scored 10.
Gabby White, a junior forward who stands at six feet, was the leading point-getter for the Tigers as she dropped 14 points. White had 10 at the half when Wilson led, but the Bruins’ defense managed to limit her touches in the second – and particularly late in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.
Sweep Averted
There was also a contest on the boys side between the defending 4A champions and last season’s 3A runners-up. Wilson’s varsity boys proved victorious by a final of 58-54 over Orangeburg-Wilkinson’s varsity boys.
Remember What Happened Last Time?
It was in the latter portions of the 2015-16 when the Tigers and Bruins met in a close playoff contest in the second round of the 3A tournament. Orangeburg-Wilkinson defeated Swansea and Wilson bested Hartsville to set up the second-round get-together between the two teams. The Tigers got the better of the Bruins by a final of 59-49.
Wilson that season advanced to within one win of the 3A state championship game before Myrtle Beach dashed its championship hopes that season.
We Were Once Where You Are…
While the Tigers may compete in the 4A ranks currently, Orangeburg-Wilkinson also has plenty of experience as a 4A team as well. The Bruins once competed one class up as recently as 2019-20.
Up Next…
The Bruins on Friday will host a fellow Orangeburg County school in 1A Bethune-Bowman. Wilson will get very acquainted with Orangeburg-Wilkinson as the next matchup listed on its schedule is a rematch on Dec. 6 in Florence.
