The MLK Classic hosted by the Hoover Lady Bucs was played on Monday, January 16th and had plenty of talents playing. We are going to breakdown each class with players that made their mark in this event. Up first will be the Class of 2023.
We will start with some unsigned guards that had good performances, and some schools need to take notice.
Sarah Kanaday Sarah Kanaday 5’5″ | PG Mortimer Jordan | 2023 State AL had a awesome shooting night, 30 points against Pleasant Grove in the last game of the event at the BallN Prep MLK Classic. Her total points included six 3’s. She can shoot from anywhere on the court, can shoot coming off of screens and can make mid-range shots too. Sarah can also be a pest on defense, making her opponents work for their offense. She has scored over 1,600 points in her Mortimer Jordan career. This is senior guard that a coach needs to be trying to bring to their campus this fall
Jaden Toney Jaden Toney 5’1″ | CG Hazel Green | 2023 State AL is the “little” engine for this Hazel Green train that is making history with every game they play and win this season. Most time, she is the smallest person on the court; standing at 5-1 but is making a lot of noise. Jaden is not afraid of contact when driving to basket, she will dish off to that open teammate and yes she can shot the ball too. On defense, Jaden is extremely active, always looking for ways to get that ball. She loves to work on both sides of the ball. Jaden had 16 points against Central Tuscaloosa in this event. This is another unsigned senior that needs to be on someone’s roster this fall. A player coming from a winning program that knows how to win.
Kennedi Wagner Kennedi Wagner 5’8″ | PG Ramsay | 2023 State AL one of the hardest working player in the state of Alabama. She has that passion for the game, that is not found a lot in players these days, always in the gym whether it’s at Ramsay with Coach Jovanda Ward and her team preparing for a run to the state finals or in a gym by herself working alone. Kennedi’s work ethic can not be questioned and her results during a game is the evidence. She can shoot the trey ball or mid-range, and her basketball IQ is very high. Kennedi had 17 points in her teams game against G. W. Carver from Columbus, GA in this event. Another unsigned senior, that needs to be on a coach’s radar. There is no quitting in this young lady.
Highlights
Next up are a couple of 2023 post players that had a good events;
Cheyenne Pearson Cheyenne Pearson 6’3″ | C Clay-Chalkville | 2023 State AL from Clay-Chalkville is the anchor in this squad, which this year is putting fear in a lot of opponents as they prepare for that run to the state finals. Standing at 6-3 it’s a challenge for most opposing teams and her desire to score makes it even harder. Cheyenne has good post moves, keeps the ball high and is a rebounding machine. On defense, her presence is felt with that length protecting her rim with the threat to block shots when necessary. She will be taking her talents to South Alabama in the fall.
Alanah Pooler Alanah Pooler 6’1″ | PF Hoover | 2023 State AL is one of Hoover Lady Bucs’ post player and has been an impacted player this season for this team. She is one of those “DNA” players who talk about; mother and dad were D1 athletes. Alanah doesn’t show alot of emotions but just gets the job done. She will bully her way under the basket for a score and a lot of “and-ones”, but don’t leave her open around the perimeter because she can shot the trey ball. Alanah is another player to just recently become a member of the 1K point club. She has garnered some high interest and offers for a few schools, however as this article is being finalized for publication Alanah has committed to the Shelton State CC and Coach Madonna Thompson. She can now just focused on working toward her second straight state championship.
Next up will be the 2024 players that stood out during this event.
