Grace Hannam may not have scored the most points for her #9 Cedar Falls team in their big win against #3 Xavier on Saturday evening but instead left her mark in other categories, rebounding especially. Hannam, who possesses great size and athleticism, has led her team in rebounding up until this point throughout their season. Against Xavier she was a crucial part in their victory as she recorded 12 rebounds, 10 of the being offensive. She also went on to score 7 points and blocked 7 shots during the affair. This Cedar Falls team is sneaky good and a team to keep an eye once playoffs begin. They have won 5 out of their last 5 while 3 of those teams were ranked in the #10 in rankings at the time that their contest took place. They have a good amount of star power in the form of junior Grace Knutson Grace Knutson 5’10” | SG Cedar Falls | 2024 State IA , a pretty balanced team, and a good system on both sides of the ball. If they just worry about winning one game at a time once the playoffs start I think that they will make it to their sub-state game with an opportunity to make it to Des Moines.
Sadie Cox
Sadie Cox
Sadie Cox has had one of the top individual seasons in the state of Iowa throughout any class up until this point in my eyes. On Saturday evening that didn’t change as she scored a game high 31 points on 14/30 shooting, 16 rebounds, and 5 steals in their 74-56 win against Southeast Warren high school. Cox has been working hard to show off her consistency and efficient play in the post area this year and up until now it’s led to some success. Throughout their first 13 games the Tigers are 7-6 and she is averaging 18.7 PPG on 39.1% shooting, 14.3 RPG, and 2 APG. If she completes the year with stats like this it’ll make her as one of the only players in the state to average a double-double for the entirety of the season. An Impressive feat that will help get her the recognition she definitely deserves. As a team aspect Lenox likes to run their main offense through Cox’s, as she is usually in a good spot with her height and size to score next to the basket. Going forward others are going to need to keep stepping up as well as their offense will need to become a little more diverse going into the playoffs to help throw off their opponents.
Andrea Lopreato Andrea Lopreato 5’9″ | SF Mount Pleasant | 2023 IA has been that senior leader and guidance this season that the Mount Pleasant Panthers needed on their way to a 9-7 record, with some resume building wins taking place during the process. Lopreato scored a game high 20 points on 8/18 shooting in their 44-35 win against Washington high school this past weekend. Lopreato had her full arsenal on display as she also recorded 18 rebounds in this contest. When we break down the numbers this statically is one of the best games all season throughout Iowa thus far. I say it all the time but this team is going to go as far as Andrea can take them. They run their offense through her, believe in her, and she has shown up in each game this season. Like every other team though once the playoffs start they will really need to think about changing some stuff around to balance out their offensive end attack. If they can do that, with Lopreato’s basketball skill, this team could shock the world and make a nice run into the playoffs before the season comes to the end.
Sadie Maas Sadie Maas 6’0″ | C Waukee NW | 2024 State IA and Waukee NW had maybe the biggest turnout for a girls game this season thus far as this rivalry cuts deep on both sides for these programs. The opponent I’m talking about is their cross-town rival Waukee high school. The Wolves traveled to take on the Warriors on Friday evening, ending with a 46-38 victory for the Wolves at the end of the contest. In this one Maas had 20 points on 9/16 shooting along with 10 rebounds to help propel her team to victory. This was a major issue for Waukee as they ended up losing the rebounding battle by a difference of 13 total rebounds, 6 on the defensive side and 7 on the offensive side. The Wolves haven’t put the best season together by starting just 5-8 by they are looking on the up and up moving forward with some momentum after this win. Given the right matchup and where they are seeded, I could see this team winning some games in the playoffs but that will entail some hardworking and things falling into place over the long run.
