Sometimes, playmaking is another way of saying passing, but there is much more to playmaking than that, in my opinion. Playmakers can make game-changing plays on both ends of the floor and flip a game on its head in seconds. Let’s talk about a few players who fit that bill.
Samantha Schmitt Samantha Schmitt 5'6" | PG Oregon | 2024 State WI
There aren’t many guards I’ve enjoyed watching over the past year from the midwest than Schmitt. She may not be a top recruit in the country, but she thinks the game is on another level. She directs traffic when she gets the ball, and she understands how different movements by her teammates can cause issues for the defense. Schmitt is one of the leaders in assists in the state, and it’s easy to understand why that’s the case. The Oregon junior has also gotten better as a shooter over the past year, and she looks way more confident in herself when she gets a chance to let one fly.
Reese Rogowski
The Wittenberg-Birnamwood guard has the athleticism that can make it challenging to deal with for teams in D4. When Rogowski gets in a rhythm, she becomes of the most challenging kids to get out of rhythm. I love how well she finds her spots and how comfortable she looks in those spots. She’s worked in the background, and it’s shown on the floor.
Gracie Gopalan Gracie Gopalan 5'4" | PG Waupun | 2024 State WI
After struggling a little around the New Year, Waupun has time to get back into a groove before the postseason starts next month. Gopalan and her other two main running mates have championship DNA, but I’ve always said Gopalan is the key to this whole operation. The guard has the quickness to beat anyone off the dribble, she can knock down shots, but more importantly, she harasses opposing ball handlers. Every time she gets that pressure at the point of attack, Waupun becomes extremely dangerous.
Kylah McCullers
The Madison East senior can score in bunches. Many teams become state title contenders if they add her to their team. That can’t happen, but it speaks to how much she can swing a game, even as the focal point of an offense. The Purgolders are a group that was a team that gave some of the top teams in the Big Eight fits last season, and that was down to McCullers. McCullers could hit ten 3-pointers in a game if she gets time and space against a zone.
