Stokes scored in a multitude of different ways including going 10/14 overall and 4/5 from the free throw line. She has really been the soul of this team and program this year so far. Stokes is a versatile 2-way guard that plays hard on both ends of the floor. Her offensive ability is superior to most her age and her IQ jumps off the page. This matchup seems like it was a blow out but I think both programs took something important away in the end of this contest. Newell Fonda is the #3 ranked team in 1A coming into this as the underdog while the Midgets are the #1 team in 3A. When you account for this I would say that Newell definitely held their own and stuck in this one when they could of folded after losing the first quarter by a score of 23-12 . Going forward I anticipate this team to make it back to state after coming off of a championship a year ago. They play well enough, have experience, have star power, and know what it takes to win in big games, all this should add up for some success once playoffs tip off in a short few weeks.
Molly Noelck Molly Noelck 5’9″ | PG Johnston | 2023 State IA and the Johnston Dragons stayed undefeated after their win on Monday night to move to 15-0 thus far. Noelck and company have been super dominate this year and it was no different on Monday night against Cedar Rapids-Jefferson high school. Molly scored 13 points and dished out 10 assists on 5/5 shooting from the field and looked like a real play maker out there. I always say how it’s hard to shine on this team because of how good each, individual player is and the skills they possess but she is doing a great job of being consistent for her squad up while making an impact in each contest up until this point. Moving forward this team is going to be the most popular in the state, and have been for a minute now, as they have 4-8 players who could play at the next level, Noelck included. Once this season comes to an end and the dust settles I’ll be intrigued to see where everyone stands, offer and interests wise.
Andrea Lopreato Andrea Lopreato 5’9″ | SF Mount Pleasant | 2023 IA and the Mount Pleasant Panthers recorded a 35 point victory on Monday evening against Danville high school by a final score of 65-30. Lopreato, who has been a dominate force all season, scored a game high 25 points on 10/16 shooting from the field, including 2/4 from behind the three point line and 3/4 from the free throw line. Before this year Andrea was named as a player to watch for her senior season and she is showing off why. Her ability to score the ball and wall up VS the offensive player while she plays defense is impressive. She has a good handle that can be used under pressure to escape a tough situation or get an open teammate a bucket. Her game style comes off as aggressive as she knows that no one is going to be able to stop her while attacking the hoop in the manner she does. When it’s all said and done at the end of this year she could be one of the states leaders in PPG for the 2023 class along with ranking in the top five in a few other categories as well. We will just have to wait and see.
Karlie Anderson
Karlie Anderson
Karlie Anderson and Pella Christian recorded just their second win on the season last night VS Albia high school but not to worry as they look to take this momentum into each of their next games until the end of the regular season and keep some momentum going into the playoffs. Anderson, though she isn’t always leading the team in scoring, had the night of her season thus far by making a game high 17 points on 6/13 shooting, 5 of 11 from behind the arc. She did a good job of finding her spots around the perimeter so that should could get an open look at the hoop. This started off early on in the game and progressed till the final minutes. This team has had to play some solid, ranked program this year so far and have played them close in a majority of the contests. Looking at the rest of their schedule and into the playoffs I would say that this group could get a few more quality wins before it is all said or done. With the players that this program possesses along with some production from Anderson and others, things should trend in an upward trajectory.
