There are four players who I’d like to highlight in particular today.
Aili Tanke
At times, there isn’t anything you can do as a team when Johnston is rolling offensively. Unfortunately for Sioux City East, Tuesday was one of those nights. Tanke shot eight of ten from the field, making her one 3-point attempt and all three free throws. The Iowa State commit made 12 of the 14 shots she took overall on Tuesday night, and when that happens, good luck to anyone in 5A.
Alyssa Bartlett
The Southeast Polk guard does everything on the court for her team, and Tuesday was no different. Bartlett finished the Rams Region Final win with 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. The wildest aspect of Bartlett’s stat line that night was that seven of her nine rebounds against Iowa City Liberty were of the offensive variety. Bartlett is a winning player who does everything a coach wants from their lead guard. In a game earlier this season, Bartlett nearly recorded a triple-double without scoring a point, if that tells you what kind of a player she is for the Rams.
Ellie Muller
The freshman led the Dowling Catholic Maroons in scoring in their win over Iowa City West. Muller scored 20 points in the Maroons’ win and made all nine of her shot attempts from the field, two of her three free-throw attempts, recorded 12 rebounds, and recorded eight blocked shots. Muller’s talent is evident and will play a significant role in the Maroons’ run at the Wells Fargo Center this next week. The Maroons were the one team who beat Johnston this season, and if they are to do that again, they’ll need to get performances like the one they got from Muller in the Region Final to do it again.
Elise Jaeger
The Valley forward is a steady two-way force who can change how teams play against her team. She didn’t play her best offensive game against Cedar Falls but recorded 11 rebounds, five steals, and two blocks in a low-scoring affair. Jaeger can be the difference in a game at the State tournament if things go Valley’s way in Des Moines.
