The Cobras’ defense proved to be a bit stingier than that of Berkeley and, as a result, Cane Bay proved victorious in its final matchup prior to the 5A tournament. The final score ended up being 32-27.
With the win, the Cobras finish the regular season with a 17-8 record along with going 7-1 against Region 6-AAAAA opponents. The Stags’ regular season concludes with a 9-13 mark and a region showing of 2-6.
Region Ramifications
The victory clinched a share of the Region 6-AAAAA championship for Cane Bay as it and Stratford concluded their regular seasons with identical 7-1 records in the region. The Knights defeated Goose Creek on the same night.
January 20
That was when Cane Bay and Berkeley first exchanged pleasantries earlier this season. That matchup also resulted in a win for the Cobras with that contest’s final score being 49-31.
How Things Progressed
If the first quarter was any indication, it appeared a Cobras rout was in sight. The combination of efficient offense and a strong full court press propelled Cane Bay to an early 13-4 lead at the end of the first frame. The Cobras finished the first quarter with a 9-0 run.
Baskets were continuing to be come at a premium, but Cane Bay managed to put a few more on the board than the Stags in the second quarter. As both teams entered their respective locker rooms, it was 20-8 at the half.
Berkeley managed to trim its deficit down to single digits at the conclusion of the third quarter. What was a 12-point lead for the Cobras at halftime had dwindled to nine as it was 28-19 at the conclusion of three stanzas.
The Stags were within striking distance late in the fourth quarter as they only trailed Cane Bay by four. Berkeley was unable to find a few more baskets that would have brought even with the Cobras and it would be Cane Bay that completed a five-point win to close out the 2022-23 regular season.
Primetime Performers
Alaina Nettles Alaina Nettles 5'8" | CG Cane Bay | 2023 State SC had herself another double-digit scoring output. The Cobras’ star senior guard and Charleston Southern commit finished with a 10-point game. She also shined as a rebounder, runner of point, passer and with intercepting Stags passes.
Fittingly, a senior was the leading point-getter for Berkeley. That upperclassman was Jordan Rivers, a forward. Rivers led all scorers with 12 points. She made four free throws late in the fourth quarter that got the Stags within four points of the Cobras. She also had no problems attempting shots from mid-range and long range.
Senior Night
Rivers was one of the three seniors from the girls team who was honored between the girls and boys games. The other were Jordyn Ray and Denasia McCutcheon-Major. The boys team is graduating five seniors.
Clean Sweep
Following the Cane Bay girls’ victory over Berkeley, the Cobras’ boys team also proved victorious over the Stags by a final tally of 54-41.
The Cobras (19-6, 6-2) and Stags (9-13, 3-5) were tied at 18 at halftime before Cane Bay outscored Berkeley 16-10 in the third quarter and 20-13 in the final frame en route to victory.
Close Calls
The five-point win for the Cobras is tied for the second-slimmest for Cane Bay against an in-state opponent.
The Cobras defeated Carolina Forest by five points (51-46) in overtime in mid-December and Wando by three (48-45) on Jan. 27.
