The Minnesota commit seems to have turned a corner in the 2nd half of this season. She’s always had the size and touch to dominate at the high school level, and that’s just what she’s done over the past month. Her ability to seal and catch the ball high in traffic to get easy baskets is unguardable for most teams in the state, and she dominated. Altoona made a run to the sectional finals last season. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went to the state tournament this year.
After losing Lily Krahn last year and losing in the regional title game, at home, as a No. 1 seed to Columbus in overtime, things looked bleak at PDC. However, the UW-Oshkosh commit has been solid this season and likely has led her team back to a No. 1 seed in their sub-sectional. Knapp has done more of what made her good last season. She’s shot the ball well, made aggressive passes, and been the leader her team needed this season.
The Milwaukee Academy of Science guard/wing changed the Novas game entirely against Brookfield East last night. Johnson was the key figure in the Novas trimming, the 30-point Spartan lead to nine in less than 12 minutes. Johnson rebounded the ball, found her way to the basket, and scored through traffic. I loved what she did last night because everything she did lead to the Novas succeeding. She won’t be the first or second name on scouting reports, but she can change the course of a blowout in a few minutes.
There hasn’t been a year where Drew hasn’t played at the state tournament since she got to Westfield. The junior is a kid used to winning anywhere she goes and is willing to do whatever it takes to help her team finish with more points than the opposing team. The more I see her play, the more I appreciate what she does. Drew takes what the defense gives her and runs with it. She’s not shy about taking shots the opposing team gives her because she knows she can make any shot on the floor.
