Continue ReadingI was excited to see so many new faces on opening day, as well as players who are already showing progression that I have recently covered, not to leave out impressive performances from those I already knew about. Here are 6 that caught my eye on opening day
Terriah Taylor-5’6 G (House 4 Hoops 2026) Shoemaker [2026]
Taylor is an athletic guard that not only handled the ball under pressure but also saw the floor while being defended. She understands how to create her shot and get it off, and showed she could knock down the midrange jumper, which included the “stop and pop”, yet her first step was equally impressive as she scored off the dribble. Her on-the-ball defense was nice, she has quick hands and came away with steals
McKenna Cooley McKenna Cooley 5'7" | SG Ouachita Parish Highschool | 2026 LA -5’8 G (My Sister’s Keeper 2026) Quachita Parish [2026]
Cooley was another athletic guard that brought the heat on both ends of the court. Her baseline-to-baseline defense was smothering and helped to create turnovers and she also grabbed some rebounds and handled the ball in the open court afterward. She made tough passes look easy and also showed a solid pull-up jumper which she knocked down. Her deceptive first step enabled her to get to the rim and score
Essence Curry Essence Curry 5'6" | CG Carl Albert | 2026 State OK -5’5 G (Team Griffin 2026 E 40 Cobbins) Carl Albert [2026]
Curry is a long and athletic guard, which is also the base yet watching her play the passing lane over and over had me smiling. She understands how to not only attack off the dribble, her first step is explosive, with either hand but create contact on her finishes, which is a huge plus. She also created her shot while being defended and knocked down the mid to long-range jumper
Tessa Delgrosso 5’9 G (TX Platinum 2026 S40 Bartlett) Rockwall Heath [2026]
Delgross is another long and athletic guard with solid intangibles and one of them is what I love to see and that’s playing the passing lane. That is somewhat of a lost art yet she made it into a masterpiece as she not only came away with steals but she handled the ball afterward, many times coast to coast. She scores off the dribble, finishes strongly after the lick, saw the floor, and drops it from outside
Makala DesJarlais Makala DesJarlais 5'11" | PF Bishop Kenny | 2027 State FL -5’11 F (Blue Heat Basketball Academy 2026) Assumption[2027]
Desjarais impressed me off the top as she dove on the floor for loose balls yet after seeing she was playing up, that grabbed me even more. Her BB-IQ is high and she not only catches whatever you throw to her, but she also showed nice moves around the basket to finish, with either hand. She also took the defender off the dribble and finished after contact and she rebounded on both ends of the court, very nice upside
Michayah Robinson Michayah Robinson 6'3" | C The Kinkaid School | 2026 TX -6’2 C/F ( TNBA Houston 2026)
Robinson is on admission, not a CRUSOE, and her continuous improvement had me smiling. She stands over “the magic number” which is 6’0 and college coaches love that yet her timing to block, alter and (or) deflect shots keeps getting betting better. She scored on putbacks, yes she rebounds on both ends and she goes after the ball off the rim. She’s also understanding how to use her body around the basket, on both ends
