With so many talented players across the state of Oklahoma, it’s a challenge to narrow it down to just five for this article. However, after careful consideration and evaluation, we’ve determined that the top 5 players in the class of 2024 are Zya Vann Zya Vann 5'9" | PG Bethany | 2024 State OK of Bethany, Caya Smith Caya Smith 6'2" | SF Putnam City West | 2024 State OK of Putnam City West, Jill Twiehaus Jill Twiehaus 5'10" | SG Jenks | 2024 State OK of Jenks, Hannah Coons Hannah Coons 6'2" | PF Kiefer | 2024 State OK of Kiefer, and Mary Carden Mary Carden 6'6" | C Idabel | 2024 State OK of Idabel. Let’s take a closer look at each of these standout players and what makes them so special and fun to watch.
Zya is an explosive point guard that has the tools to be great! She effects the game in so many ways that make her a high-valued player. She attacks off the dribble explosively, and can create space for her shot. Defensively, she is just as good – using her lateral quickness to stay in front of the ball and apply pressure – elite defender. She handles pressure well off the dribble and doesn’t turn it over. She shoots the ball consistently from deep, will hit big time shots if needed, and knows how to get her teammates involved. An underrated part of her game is her ability to make her teammates better – she makes sure everybody eats!
Caya is probably one of the top athletes in the state of Oklahoma. Her length and athleticism puts her in a league of her own when it comes to potential at the next level. She uses her length to protect the rim and her lateral quickness to guard all positions. She rebounds well and can push the ball in transition and make plays in the open floor and when attacking. If she continues to work on her shooting ability, she will raise her stock as a player on the national level and definitely get more attention from high level collegiate programs.
Jill is one of the most skilled player in the state of Oklahoma overall. She shoots the ball at a high-level and has proven to hit big shots throughout her career. She is great scoring off of screens without having the ball, and she is a 3-level scorer. She makes good decisions with the ball in her hands and rarely get sped up and out of control. Jill is a high-level player that you notice on the court when playing – good things happen when the ball is in her hands.
Hannah is versatile post player with unlimited potential. She flows on the court with an aggressive mindset – playing strong in the paint and finishing through contact. She can stretch the floor with her shooting ability from deep and can put the ball on the floor and attack open gaps with the best of them. She finished the season averaging over 20+ points a game and led her team to the semi-finals of 3A State Tournament. Hannah is a special player that continues to grow her game everyday.
Mary is a force to be reckoned with. Standing at 6’6, She towers over opponents and easily dominates when she decides to go to work in the paint. Her size and length makes her a great rim protector and rebounder. She outlets the ball really well to guards and runs rim to rim, sits down in the post, will bang and can score over both shoulders with her nice touch. Mary could open up her game even more if she establish that she could hit the mid-range jumper or even from deep out of the pick/pop. I look forward to seeing her play this grassroots season with Pro Skills EYBL 17U.
