Memorial Weekend is a time to remember those who have bravely and selflessly served our country, providing us with the freedoms we’ve come to enjoy. The long weekend also represents the end of the school year, the beginning of Summer, along with cookouts, fireworks, and many other fun festivities around the country. This is a themed article, so below is a group of five ladies who play at schools whose mascots involve stars and/or stripes (Bedford North Lawrence and Western Boone are the Stars, South Adams is the Starfires which is a star made up of stripes, and Rochester, well, it’s a bit of a stretch, but they are the Zebras…with stripes.)
Madisyn is a very strong, physical lead guard who understands what she is/isn’t and performs her role well. She is good with the basketball, gets it where it needs to go, and runs the offense like a traditional point guard. She is a solid North/South athlete, and if she can get downhill, it’s tough to stop her momentum. If she can continue to develop her perimeter shot and make it more consistent, she could be a double threat offensively. Defensively, she is very instinctual and understands how to take angles, plus she rebounds her position well.
Macy had a really nice Junior season, leading the Starfires in both scoring (15.2 ppg) and steals (4.1 spg). She has a lot of length at her height, she is athletic in all directions, and she plays with a lot of versatility at both ends of the floor. Offensively, she can attack the basket and change directions off the bounce, but she has also started to show improved touch from the perimeter. She is even a willing creator for others. Defensively, she can take on most guards and wings, plus she will occasionally defend an undersized forward.
Chloe was tremendous down the stretch this February for the Lady Stars, averaging 22 points per game in the two Semi-State games and the State Finals, helping to lead Bedford North Lawrence to the Class 4A crown. She has always been tremendously skilled, she possesses length, athleticism, and fluidity, but now she looks a little grittier and is playing with more physicality more consistently. Her ability to create offense and make shots at all levels is hard to match in Indiana. Chloe recently made a verbal commitment to the University of Alabama.

I realize I just spoke on Ella’s behalf a few days ago following The Classic in Louisville, but she fits the profile for this article, and she should have a really nice Junior year in 2023-2024. The Lady Zebras will graduate their top two scorers, and her combination of athleticism, developing strength, and a versatile skillset should really help her to be a problem at the Class 3A level. She has an athletic frame, length, bounce, and she can play inside or out, but she always plays with great energy and is always around the action. If she adds a consistent 3-point shot, watch out!
Ila Stokes
Ila Stokes
On a team with four Seniors and a Junior in their core six this year, Ila found a way to make an impression and join that group. As a rookie, she averaged 4.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, plus she made a number of hustle plays for the Lady Stars. Though she is a little undersized, she does have nice length at her height, plus she has an athletic frame and moves well in most directions. As she gains more experience and plays a bigger role moving forward, look for her to be involved in the action more, but to also bring more consistency to her game.
