There is no way I saw everyone, but there were a handful of kids I’d like to talk about because of the flashes I saw from them.
Katie Scharf
As the kids were getting some shooting competition, one group of four in the main gym this afternoon won something like four of the five spots. It almost became a joke over how well they were shooting, and I watched them in one of the runs and found myself focusing on Scharf. She has a short and simple shot, and she was one of the kids who made shot after shot in those competitions.
Kate Holmquist Kate Holmquist 5'7" | PG Maple Grove | 2026 State MN
The Maple Grove guard was one of the kids who stood out to me in the morning session. I thought she looked good shooting the ball and made most of her shots in the morning session. Everything looked quick, simple, and repeatable, and because of that, I’m sure she’s a threat all high school and AAU season long.
The 6-0 forward from Lakeville North looked solid in the 3-on-3 games, especially with FIBA rules. Her athleticism worked well in situations where there’s always movement, and she made some nice plays contesting the rim by reading the play and moving quickly from block to block.
Tucker Downs Tucker Downs 5'11" | CG Mankato West | 2026 State MN
I thought Downs was one of the most impressive players of the day whenever I watched her. She’s this quick dynamic kid who can make plays off the dribble and made plays for herself and others while going toward the basket. Her athleticism showed in multiple different sessions and overall was impressive from start to finish.
MiKayla Werner MiKayla Werner 6'0" | PF Hortonville | 2024 State WI
I’ve always been a significant fan of Werner’s game, and she showed why today. Her versatility showed in multiple ways, and the 3-on-3s is where I first watched her excel. She’s a 6-0 athlete, so she switched, blocked shots, finished around the rim, and was so fluid in who she could guard. Werner’s ability to defend guards showed in situations where guards got space to operate, and Werner shrunk the court for them with her size and length. I believe in her ability to help a program at the next level, and she’s the kind of person that coaches want in their facilities daily.
