Continue ReadingFreshmen normally have a period of adjustment when it comes to the high school game. After years of leading their middle school teams, the shock of being “knocked down a few pegs,” can come as real confusion and be hard to process. These girls won’t have to worry about “being knocked down a few pegs”:
Jeriyah Pryor Jeriyah Pryor 5'6" | PG George Washington | 2027 WV and Rayana Breckenridge Rayana Breckenridge 5'6" | CG George Washington | 2027 WV , George Washington, PG/G, 5-6/5-3, Fr./Fr. – Breckenridge and Pryor separate themselves from this freshmen class with their athletic ability and mentality. Both of these kids are capable of taking over a basketball game when asked to do so. They can attack the basket and cause havoc on the defensive end. Both of them excel at causing chaos and being defensive menaces to opposing guards. They poke, prod and annoy all the time. There’s never a time they aren’t going all out on the defensive end. Offensively, they can hit the jump shot and make their way to the rim with quick first steps and slippery moves that easily shed their defenders on the way to the basket. GW may be filled of talented players, but these two will get their chance to make a mark on what GW hopes is a Charleston-bound season.
Ava Workman Ava Workman 5'6" | PG Greenbrier East | 2027 WV , Greenbrier East, G, 5-4, Fr. – Workman may be tiny as she comes into high school, but she’s not lacking for confidence. Workman will immediately see the floor for Greenbrier East thanks to her strength and her slippery game at the point. She’s not easy to track down and can bump and bang with guards who may have a few inches on her. She’s got great handles to handle the contact, and while she may need a little time to adjust to the high school game, she will do so quickly thanks to her work ethic and confidence.
Triniti Austin Russell, St. Albans, SG, 5-7, Fr. – Triniti is a stud. She’s long, quick and plays with a high motor. She can score by shooting it from the outside, slashing and her best quality is turning her defense into offense. She will fit the St. Albans system very well with her athleticism. She’s already used to taking command of games, she tallied several 40-plus point games as an eighth grader.
Sophie Lott Sophie Lott 5'6" | SG Parkersburg High | 2027 WV , Parkersburg, 5-7, G, Fr. – Lott owns a kit that would make many freshmen around the state blush as they all come into the high school game together. Not only can she handle the ball, but she can shoot the 3 and makes for a rugged defender, something PHS head coach Chris Murray likely will love. On top of those skills, she’s a smart player who makes the right basketball play and isn’t lacking in her ability to get her teammates involved. After an offseason where the Big Reds lost Brilynn Florence and Sierra Mason, Lott will immediately make a bid to replace some of the production of the departed seniors.
Aleigh Cheeseman Aleigh Cheeseman 5'8" | SF Doddridge County | 2027 WV , Doddridge County, W, 5-11, Fr. – Cheeseman brings plenty of offensive capability to the Bulldogs. She has a variety of options when it comes to scoring the basketball. She can take her opponent off the dribble. She can shoot the deep shot. She understands the importance of keeping her teammates involved. Her length also presents several problems for Little Kanawha Conference defenders. Mainly, she’s already well versed in using her length to get to the free throw line. Overall, she’s going to be in immediate asset for head coach Lisa Cheeseman as the Bulldogs try to get back to Charleston.
