There may not be a hotter shooter out there at the end of this AAU season than Kristen Phelan Kristen Phelan 5’9″ | CG Tappan Zee | 2025 NY . She picked up right where she left off in Louisville working as a long-range bomber for her Empire State Blue Flames 2025 team. She is excellent at spacing the floor and catches ready to shoot. You will routinely see her move her spot when balls go into the post so that on the kick out the defenders can’t locate her. When she catches, she wastes no time getting her shot off quickly over the closeout. Even in the rare instance where she misses a few, she is unfazed and shoots the next one with confidence. She plays with energy at both ends and some D1 school is going to get themselves an absolute sniper. She will bring her sweet stroke back to Tappan Zee High School for her junior year this winter.
Playing up on the New Heights 2024 team, Mia excels at both ends of the floor. She is a blur with the ball in her hands and gets into the paint with ease. She has a tight handle and with her speed she is a very tough matchup on the perimeter. Combine that with a consistent 3-point shot and you have a weapon all over the offensive end. Defensively, she uses that same quickness to her advantage staying in front of the ball and being opportunistic getting steals. She averaged 2+spg per game as a sophomore at Mt. St. Mary’s and she is more than halfway to 1,000 career points. She led the team in points, steals and assists last season and should improve on those numbers as a junior.
Highlights
Another 2025 playing on the New Heights 2024 roster, Maya has the frame and strength to compete with the older girls. She gets great positioning in the post and when she catches, she makes quick moves to the basket where she is comfortable finishing with both hands. Not a great elevator or exceptionally long, Maya uses her body well to create space to get her shots off inside with ease and keep people off the glass. She is very good off the ball cutting to the basket to receive passes from her slashing guards and wings and she finishes strong at the rim. In a loaded rising junior class at Gil St. Bernard’s that includes Sidney Quinn Sidney Quinn 6’2″ | PF Gill St. Bernard | 2025 State NJ and Gandy Malou-Mamel Gandy Malou-Mamel 6’6″ | C Gill St. Bernard’s | 2025 State NJ , only rising senior Brooke Baisley Brooke Baisley 5’10” | SF Gill St. Bernard’s | 2024 State NJ outscored Maya last season. This team should be fun to watch this year.
Highlights
One last 2025 on the New Heights 2024 team, Sofia’s strong mid-range game and attacking the rim has only improved this AAU season. She is comfortable knocking down the 3-point shot as well as she made 27 in her sophomore season at IHA. She plays with patience offensively and reads the defenders before making a decision on how to attack. She can go to the rim off the bounce or use it to get defenders on their heels for her to utilize her pull-up game. Sofia works hard on the glass and is strong with the ball. As the second leading returning scorer on the IHA roster, Sofia’s experience playing a challenging AAU schedule with New Heights should help her lead IHA as they look to repeat as Non-Public A State Champs.
