That was the case for many of the state’s premier hoopers as they converged on the metro-Atlanta city of Marietta for this year’s Prep Girls Hoops Freshman Showcase. It was one of five that took place around the country the weekend of August 12-13.
Next Play 360 was the venue that was in use for the festivities. Out of the four courts that the venue hosted, the talent that was on hand used three of those courts. After spotlighting a few of the primetime performers in two articles, let us highlight a few more, shall we?
Here is someone who has made herself familiar with a pair of states. Norris typically plays for Georgia-based Trinity Christian while playing on the travel circuit for a Sunshine State-based AAU organization. That organization is Florida Girls Basketball. Norris’ quickness enables her to get out in transition and finish on layup attempts. She places lots of emphasis on taking care of the ball and can even do so amongst a group of opposing defenders. Norris is a tough player as she has no problems taking hard hits and will draw contact to get to the free throw line. She is listed at 5-foot-3.

Davis’ play caught the attention of plenty of onlookers in Marietta – including in one of the final games of the Georgia Freshman Showcase. She stands at 5-foot-8 and plays her high school ball for 7A Milton. Davis has also understood the art of handling the ball in transition. She also will get herself in position to haul in rebounds. Offensive rebounds will typically turn into two-point putbacks. Davis also knows that basketball is a game played on contact – and is willing to draw said contact if it means getting to the free throw line. She also will make accurate distributions in the transition game.

Wheeler’s very own closed out the girls portion of Freshman Showcase Sunday in Georgia with an impressive performance. Saving her best for last included the ability to knock down her attempts from long range. James knows how to call for the ball in a halfcourt play – a clear sign of the confidence she has in her ability to make plays. Her scoring versatility extends to what she can do inside the arc as well. Passing and establishing herself as an on-court leader are two other attributes that will bode well for both James and her 7A Wheeler team this season and in the future.

One cannot say it – or type it – enough that height advantage is something that cannot be coached. That can especially be the case when dealing with youngsters. Edwards stands at 5-foot-10 and played her AAU ball with a pair of programs – Lady True Elite and Southern Star. She will wear the uniform of McEachern during the high school season. While the bread and butter of a big like Edwards may be what she can get accomplished as a scorer and rebounder close to the basket, she will also display her offensive versatility with how she can handle the rock and attack the basket.
