These events give teams the opportunity to get game action and get a preview of how this season’s squad will look. Burroughs High School in Burbank, CA has played host to one of these fall leagues each weekend. I was able to attend the league on Saturday, Sept. 23 and here’s a look at some of the top standouts I saw.
1.

– Oak Park 2026
White remains one of the better point guards in Southern Section. She’s a strong guard who’s gotten stronger in the offseason and can muscle her way to the basket bumping off defenders. She’s a good ball-handler who can dribble against defensive pressure and stay under control. Very good at running the break. Her offensive game consists of drives to the basket and pull-up jumpers from midrange.
2. Izzy Escribano – Canyon 2027
Escribano stood out as a young point guard with some solid upside. In the game I saw, her shot may not have been dropping, but the movement and the motion was there; she was clearly comfortable at creating her own shot and was trusted to be a primary offensive option. What stood out there was her defensive ability. She was able to cut off drives and play strong on ball-defense. Good ball-handler.
3. Alaina James – Highland 2025
James stood out as a scorer both on and off the ball. Off ball she did well running the break as well as making strong cuts to the basket to put herself in position to score. She’s probably more of a two-guard but was trusted to be a primary ball-handler. She finished strong at the basket whether she was on or off ball. Able to attack defense off the dribble.
4. Kayla Zahabian – Beverly Hills 2024
Zahabian was a quick little point guard who stood out in transition. She pushes the pace well and kicks the ball ahead; a blur on the break. Knows when speed up the tempo and when to slow things down in the halfcourt; good poise. A very unselfish player who looks to pass first. Dribbles with her head up and under control and able to play against defensive pressure.
5. Alicia Quintanar – LA Marshall 2024
Quintanar was a forward playing center in the game I saw. She was able to handle the ball at times and she was very unselfish with the ball in her hands. Didn’t look to score much but did show an ability to finish at the basket. What did stand out was her defensive play. She has good size and uses that to her advantage in the paint; she’s an interior defender who can block shots and she plays solid denial defense off ball.
