Continue ReadingThe guard position was crazy loaded and it was impossible to cover them in one article or even two articles. In this article, we look at more of the guards who played well. Many of the guards listed below ran the point guard position and were playmakers on the court. Some of these guards were scorers and looked to do nothing but put the ball in the basket. Each player stood out in some way. Each was a top performer at the Florida Top 250 Expo.
Phantasia Lauriston Phantasia Lauriston 5'8" | CG Palm Bay | 2025 State FL was more than impressive at the Expo. She shot the ball well from the midrange and from behind the arc. As good as Lauriston was out on the perimeter, she was even better getting to the rim and scoring. She got to the rim effortlessly with crossovers and hesitation moves. I’ve seen Lauriston for several years and her performance at the Expo was the best I’ve ever seen her play. She finished on the left and right and had a few crafty reverse layups as well. Lauriston was just leaving defenders flatfooted and posterizing them all day long. When she wasn’t scoring, she was drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line. In transition, Lauriston was putting defenders in a bind. She made great plays after great plays. Even when the ball wasn’t in her hands, Lauriston was reading the defense and making backdoor cuts to the basket. Lauriston also got after on the defensive end, getting steals and deflections all day.
Ashley Martinez Ashley Martinez 5'4" | SG Somerset Silver Palms Academy | 2026 State FL balled out at the Top 250 Expo and was one of the best playmakers on the court. Martinez made an assist from halfcourt right on a dime, converted a no-look rap-around pass to a cutting player for a layup, and then penetrated through the zone, and threw a no-look dime to her power forward for the layup. Martinez showed great anticipation and court vision. She was special with the ball in her hands.
Ni’ana Hill Ni’ana Hill 5'7" | SF Palm Bay Magnet | 2024 State FL played very well and the most significant part of Hill’s game was her ability to make plays. She was in playmaker mode all day getting everyone involved and she did a little” eating” of her own as well. Hill had some nice rips to the paint and she scored on a few midrange shots and a few floaters. She recognized that her team had a dominant big and Hill made sure to feed it to her in the post and sometimes after drawing the defense.
Lavin Savage Lavin Savage SG Impact Christian Academy | 2025 State FL played well and was a playmaker on the court. She was in her comfort zone when pushing the ball on the break. Savage used her greatest asset -speed. She got to the rim going left and right and did a good job of getting to the free-throw line. Savage had some impressive assists in transition and again it was her ability to run past defenders that set up the assists.
Emily Gamon Emily Gamon 5'7" | CG Doral Academy Preparatory | 2024 State FL was a smooth operator out on the courts. She made some nice pinpoint passes on the offensive end of he court. Gamon was also special in the transition game where she got out on the break and made some very nice passes. As a guard with good height, Gamon was able to grab the rebound and initiate the break herself. She got up and down the court with great speed and she drew the defense numerous times and made some nice passes to her teammates. Gamon has great court vision and a high basketball IQ. She has the ability to set up opportunities for her teammates and is usually a step ahead on the floor.
Sophia Scibelli Sophia Scibelli 5'10" | SG Pedro Menendez | 2026 State FL was a beast on the court and shot the three as good as anyone on the floor. Scibelli shot the ball very well during offensive sets, and she was also effective in pulling up for the long jumper while in transition. Scibelli is a versatile offensive player who continuously works on her game. She got downhill and got to the rim where she converted some nice layups and floaters. Scibelli was one of the top 2026 players in the house
Jayla Greene had an impressive showing at the Expo. Greene ran the point some and also played the shooting guard position. Greene was automatic for most of the day from the perimeter and from all levels on the court. One of the coaches told me to make sure Greene was covered in an article and to emphasize her shooting efficiency. Greene didn’t miss too many shots at the Expo, and the only time I saw her miss was when the rafters reached down and blocked her shot. Greene was also impressive at getting to the rim and scoring, and also making plays for her teammates. She has excellent court vision and makes good decisions on the court. Greene plays with passion and heart and is a true leader on the court.
