Under the leadership of Coach Amber Mathurin, the team brought in over 150 players to Santa Fe Life Center, and the athletes were put through an intense, fast-paced series of drills and exercises so that coaches (and scouts) could assess their abilities. I have no idea who did or didn’t make the team, but here are the players that I felt I should tell you about.
It was Team Trae Young tryouts, so there was a good bit of D-1 level players in attendance. Still, Skylar stood out. Last season she was her conference’s player of the year for Classen SAS and already holds two D-1 offers. With the body control and ability to change speeds that showed on Sunday, I’d say that this 2025 is going to be a high D-1 level player before all is said and done. In an atmosphere where everyone is giving their absolute all, it takes a special kind of player to stand out even more. Durley is a star in showcase situations, in high school and club games, and will be at the D-1 college level. You can bank on it.
Aaliyah separated herself from the other players on Sunday with her poise and confidence. You can tell that she is used to being the best on whichever court she is on. She doesn’t do it in a cocky way, but in a confident way. The kind of way that makes the players around her better. They know they have a leader and a big-time scorer out there with them and it frees them up to play better. Shawnee is also very dedicated on the defensive end and is a two-time Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Her handles are silky and she runs the point with a smooth and measured pace. I’m excited to get out to Glenpool this season and see her really in her element.
Highlights
It’s been a long time since I first saw Rhyian at BorderWar back in April of last year. Since then, she has improved even more… which is scary. She was already a tough player with a really good stroke from long range. On Sunday, she showed improved handles and even more confidence. At this point, the Mayberry women are a known commodity in Tulsa and Rhyian looks to be well on her way to being the next D-1 athlete in the family. A scorer from all three levels who is dedicated defensively and is lightning fast with or without the ball. You need to be keeping an eye on this young lady or you’re going to miss out!
It’s always great to go to an event that Kayten is at because you know that her work rate is going to be through the roof and, because of it, so is everyone else who steps onto the court with her. Then again, I don’t think Coach Mathurin was going to be having much less. But, it doesn’t take anything to get Kayten going. She is a tough player who relishes the defensive opportunity. She also enjoys banging inside and using her length to rack up block after block. She is a very good rebounder and gets up and down the floor quickly. Donley already holds offers from Wayne State and Harding.
Heaven was a big-time standout during practically every drill that she participated in on Sunday. She ran the point so smoothly in thrown together situations like 3-on-3, that you’d have thought she brought her own squad to the tryouts. Not only that, but she was having fun doing it. Y’all know how much I like to see people having fun. I don’t care what you old, crotchety coaches might say… it is important to have fun and love what you do! Heaven not only has fun, she is really, really good at what she does. She can absolutely fill it up from behind the arc and when she gets hot, is almost unflappable. She also defends at a very high level. This season should see Heaven pulling in a lot more coach visits and offers.
