Class of 2028 means these players are still in middle school, but these 8th graders are players that are expected to make a big impact at the Varsity level this season. Here’s a look into some of those players (ordered alphabetically by last name). If you missed part 1, be sure to check it out here. Part 2 can be found by clicking here and part 3 can be found by clicking here.
Addy Abrell Addy Abrell 5'4" | PG Russell County | 2028 KY (Russell County)
Abrell got excellent Varsity experience as a 7th grader. She was Russell County’s 2nd leading scorer and will be asked to step up even more this season after they graduated a couple of players from their main rotation last season. While Abrell can knock down jumpers quickly inside or outside of the perimeter, she really excels off the bounce. She’s a smart player who uses shot fakes and pump fakes so well to get defenders off of their feet. Finds the gaps really well – attacks them off the bounce and makes great cuts without the ball. Active hands leads to multiple steals.

Scout Brockman (Green County)
Not many players can say they are a 6 year Varsity starter by the end of their high school career, but that is the track Brockman is on after starting for Green County as a 7th grader. I haven’t gotten the chance to watch her play, so I can say much beyond what I have heard, but I have heard she is a very tough player who isn’t afraid of physicality. Brockman was actually the Dragons leading rebounder last season (7.7 RPG) and was also the 4th leading scorer (6.5 PPG). Could potentially average a double-double as an 8th grader.
Kendall Kearney Kendall Kearney 5'4" | PG Great Crossing | 2028 KY (Great Crossing)
Kearney was the lone 7th grader on Great Crossing’s roster last season. As a point guard, she does a great job of knowing when to push it and when to slow things down. She creates well and has good speed. Can knock down shots inside and outside of the perimeter. Kearney is also a true 2-way player who can be very disruptive defensively. She got to play in about half of Great Crossings games last season and is definitely a player who could step up this season after they graduated their 2 leading scorers.
McKaila Monroe (Pulaski County)
I’d say the position that is most rare to see in HS GBB, at least in Kentucky, is the Center position. That being said, Monroe can not only be included in that group, but she is a standout in that group. She has excellent size and length. She is very tough defensively with the ability to block or alter shots, along with coming up with steals in the passing lanes. Great touch in the paint and around the basket, but can also extend out to knock down shots. Monroe truly has the potential to be a big difference maker on both ends of the court. Pulaski County has some really talented upperclassmen, but they also have some young talent like Monroe to watch out for.
Kaylynn Smith Kaylynn Smith 5'9" | SF Knox Central | 2028 KY (Knox Central)
Smith has a lot of potential. She is a tough and fearless player who does the things on the court that require a lot of effort and hard work. She is an excellent rebounder because she goes after the boards strong and doesn’t give up until she secures the rebound. Smith has great hands and finishes well with both hands. She is strong and really has the potential to be a top post player in her class.
Jooniper Strow Jooniper Strow 5'8" | SF South Warren | 2028 KY (South Warren)
South Warren had 22 players listed on their Varsity roster on KHSAA last season. Impressively, Strow was the only middle school player to make that roster. Even more impressive, she played in nearly every game for the Lady Spartans. She has great size and can make stuff happen on both ends of the court. She’s the kind of player where when you look at the stat sheet at the end of the game, you wouldn’t be surprised to see her name in every statistical category. She can come up with steals and blocks defensively. She can make good passes, knock down shots, or drive to the hoop on the other end of the court. Rebounds well and will definitely be a player South Warren will look to in the absence of 3 of their top 4 scorers from last season.

Taylin Wade Taylin Wade 5'9" | SF Frankfort | 2028 KY (Frankfort)
Wade has already shown that she has the potential to be a standout in the 2028 class for years to come. As a 7th grader, she was Frankfort’s 2nd leading rebounder and 4th leading scorer. She made the district All-Tournament team and will be poised and ready to step up even more this season. When you watch her play, you’ll notice she’s a true 2-way player. Great finishes around the rim, good moves in the post, strong defender, good rebounder… really contributes a lot.
