Pre-game warmups showcased both teams sporting bright pink “Women Can Hoop 2” shirts. Gina Falls and Julia Rauru created the shirts for a Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) project. Falls and Rauru are two members of the Prospect Girls’ Basketball team whose project revolves around promoting equity in women’s basketball. A show of solidarity before one of the biggest basketball rivalries in the Mid Suburban League East Conference ended at tip-off. The game did not dissapoint. Both teams showed grit, fight and hustle. In the end, Rolling Meadows came up on top with a 43-42 win in the final seconds of the game. Here are some of the standouts from the game:
The 6′ 0″ senior forward who recently committed to continue her college career at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater walked off the court with a solid performance on the court and a double-double. Brown had a ton of fight in her game. She took good shots and she dominated on the boards. Her talent and spirit kept the Knights in the game until the end.
Linke, the standout sophomore and multisport athlete, is always showing her athletic prowess on the court and this game was no different. Linke holds offers from a handful of D1 programs and you can be sure that more will be rolling in. Linke can shoot from any spot on the court and her ability to escape defenders taller than her is extraordinary. Her defensive skills match her offensive skills. The exciting part about Linke is we have two more seasons after this to watch her career catapult.

Elizabeth “Lizzy” Andriano
Elizabeth “Lizzy” Andriano
Don’t let Andriano’s size fool you. The 5’4″ point guard is a stunner on the court. Her motor never quits. She sprints up and down the court barely seeming to break a sweat. She can shoot the 3 with ease but her signature floater is my favorite and as smooth as a shot can be. She tallied 8 rebounds on the night for the Mustangs. Her IQ and command of the court are advanced.
Definitely the most improved player on the Mustang team, Zielinski ignited a fire in the Mustangs offense in the first quarter with 4 (nothing but net) 3 point shots. Although all twelve of her points came in the first quarter, her value on the court continued. Her rebounding and assisting in the subsequent quarters sustained the Mustang energy to assure the win. She is a notable part of this Mustang team.

Grandberry, the 6’3″ sophomore, was a force in Friday night’s game. Dalia holds multiple offers from strong D1 programs. Dalia was the kindle to the fire in the Mustang win. She has an energizing bench presence and is wildly athletic for her height. Her voice is audible throughout the gym- pumping up her team whether on the court or on the bench. Her offensive rebound on a missed free throw with a putback won the game for the Mustangs in the last 5 seconds of the game.
