While we wait for the bulk of programs to start up play, we continue our look at the updated rankings in the Garden State and the Class of 2024 with the No. 6-10 small forwards in the senior class.
No. 6: Jackie Schels Jackie Schels 5'10" | SF Wallkill Valley | 2024 State NJ – Wallkill Valley (No. 24 overall)
Double-double machine. Schels averaged a double-double for the second-straight season, but what she might not have done as a sophomore, she improved upon greatly as a junior, improving her passing and interior defense most of all. The stats speak for themselves, and what makes her that much more impressive is that she’s only 5-9. She’s making her presence felt in the lane and on the boards as an undersized forward that has an oversized impact on the game.
No. 7: Brooke Baisley Brooke Baisley 5'10" | SF Gill St. Bernard's | 2024 State NJ – Gill St. Bernard’s (No. 27 overall)
Soon to be headed to Boston University to continue her basketball career, Baisley made some great strides offensively for GSB as a junior. She was working on it throughout the summer, and repetition only continued to help out her shooting as Baisley was shooting with consistency and efficiency from beyond the arc. It’s opened up the rest of her game and allowed her to expand her offensive footprint on the floor. We’ve been impressed with her attention to detail in the passing game as well.
No. 8: Jaylyn Orefice Jaylyn Orefice 5'9" | SF Union City | 2024 State NJ – Union City (No. 29 overall)
A really solid defense, Orefice has worked hard on building up her endurance when it comes to on-ball and off-ball defending. She seems really comfortable in those situations and it’s contributed plenty to blocks and steals for her and fast-break opportunities for her team. Really impressed with her aggression in the lane, attacking the basket often when the ball is in her hands. She’s also had plenty of success off-ball offensively, commanding possession and generating offensive opportunities when they’re presented.
No. 9: Angelina Zagone Angelina Zagone 5'9" | SF Gateway | 2024 State NJ – Gateway (No. 39 overall)
We head to South Jersey with this next player in Gateway’s Angelina Zagone Angelina Zagone 5'9" | SF Gateway | 2024 State NJ , someone who’s steadily climbed up the Class of 2024 rankings over her high school tenure. Her offense is her bread-and-butter without a doubt, and she’s really evolved herself into one hell of a scorer. That also includes her being able to shoot the three at a higher clip with the ball coming her way more consistently. The way she’s been able to command the floor when on it speaks volumes to where she is as a player overall.
No. 10: Zoe Boston Zoe Boston 6'1" | SF Roselle | 2024 State NJ – Roselle (No. 41 overall)
Boston comes into the 2023-24 season off the backs of two-straight seasons averaging a double-double for Roselle. She’s established herself as one of the best forwards and players in the Union County Conference and for good reason as she embodies the best traits of a lockdown forward. Boston is much more of the traditional center/forward, which has worked incredibly well for her as her shot-blocking and defensive capabilities have shined through just as much as her offensive workload.
