During this game I saw the best individual performance this season to date, the best team I’ve seen crash the boards all season, and perhaps the deepest Kansas High School girls team I have ever witnessed in my years of coaching, sports writing, and scouting.
Here is a look at prospects whose game stood out on this night.
Macayla Askew Macayla Askew 6'0" | SF Derby | 2026 State KS , 6’0”, SF, Derby, ‘26
Askew was as dominant as I have seen any athlete play this season. She recorded a double-double scoring a game-high 23 points and she cleaned the glass for 10 rebounds. The Derby forward is ranked No. 13 overall in the Kansas Class of 2026. She shot a perfect 11-for-11 from the field and all her baskets came in the paint or in transition. She is quick and has a huge wingspan. Askew added four steals to her stat line and made one really impressive 3-foot jump shot, that you just don’t see too often anymore. I feel like she is a Division I talent, and for a slam dunk to get recruited by Division II programs.
Jaden Wilson Jaden Wilson 5'11" | PF Derby | 2024 State KS , 5’11”, PF, Derby, ‘24
Wilson essentially played with Derby’s second unit. Head Coach Bryan Chadwick subbed in five players at a time for pretty much the entire game. She collected six rebounds and scored 8 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. She is currently ranked No. 32 by Prep Girls Hoops Kansas in the class of 2024. She is more physical than Askew but also works twice as hard to get her boards. She also is a solid passer and finished with two steals and two assists against the Railers.
Carsen Carpenter Carsen Carpenter 5'10" | SF Derby | 2025 State KS , 5’10”, SF, Derby, ‘25
Carpenter is currently ranked No. 52 in the class of 2025 by Prep Girls Hoops. The Panther forward also played with Derby’s second five. She finished the game with a total of six rebounds, six points, one steal, and one blocked shot. In my opinion, she is the most poised defender among Derby’s frontcourt players.
Kyler Demel, 5’10”, PF, Derby, ‘24
Demel started for the Panthers and was second on the team in rebounding with seven boards. She fights for position and understands how to block out. She does not have the vertical that her teammates do, but she anticipates missed shots well. She scored four points. Her primary method of scoring is going to be on putbacks.
Amaree Henderson Amaree Henderson 5'10" | SG Newton | 2025 State KS , 5’10”, SG, Newton, ‘25
Henderson just recently returned to the Railer lineup, and she did look a little rusty. She is ranked No. 42 among her Class of 2025 peers. She is quite athletic and not afraid to put up shots. She scored seven points and had three rebounds. Henderson is a player who will benefit from playing club ball or at team camps this summer, just to get her legs back.
Ana Lawrence Ana Lawrence 5'10" | CG Newton | 2027 KS , 5’9”, PF, Newton, ‘27
Lawrence is a bruiser. She is just a freshman but was not intimidated by Derby’s taller and more experienced frontcourt. She came off the bench for Newton grabbed three boards and converted on one stick back. Lawrence is an athlete to keep on the radar for the next three seasons.
