Some teams see that their postseason future is all but secure. The Seahawks of 4A Hilton Head Island appear to be one of those teams given they are in the top four in their region despite a 2023-24 season of having to overcome an injury to one of their best players.
Then there is Colleton County whose best chance at a playoff berth may be through one of the three at-large bids in the 4A Lower State bracket.
The Cougars’ case for one of those at-large bids was not helped by what took place on Wednesday at Hilton Head Island. The Seahawks scored a victory over Colleton County by a final score of 40-33.
Remember What Happened Last Time?
When the scene was Colleton County with these two teams meeting up, it saw a competitive contest between the Seahawks and Cougars. Hilton Head Island picked up a 50-42 victory over Colleton County on Jan. 30.
Quarter-By-Quarter
An onlooker of Wednesday’s contest had to figure it would be potentially close given it was that the last time these two squads got together. It was indeed that through the first eight minutes with Hilton Head Island leading Colleton County by a margin of 11-8.
The Seahawks put plenty of distance between themselves and the Cougars in the second quarter. Hilton Head Island began the frame with a 12-0 which prompted a Colleton County timeout. As halftime commenced, it was Seahawks 24 and Cougars 14.
Colleton County displayed signs of life early in the third quarter but Hilton Head Island managed to keep the Cougars at bay throughout the stanza. With one quarter left to play, the Seahawks lead over the Cougars was 35-26.
It was only fitting that a low-scoring contest such as this one would conclude with a low-scoring quarter. Colleton County outscored Hilton Head Island 7-5, but where it mattered most was the final score which displayed a Seahawks victory.
Primetime Performers
Spearheading the Seahawks victory was junior big Leah Jackson. She led all scorers with 19 points. Jackson is a two-sport athlete who also plays volleyball alongside what she does basketball-wise. She is also an efficient rebounder.
Speaking of juniors, the Cougars’ point-getting efforts were also led by a 2025. That junior was Zariona Hudson who concluded her evening with a 17-point performance. She began the game with three 3-pointers – the only triples Colleton County connected on.
