In this Update we added along a talent group of Freshman at every position. One at the PG spot, that has displayed the ability to knock down open shots and grind on defense is Kendal Cavenee Kendal Cavenee PG Elm Creek | 2027 NE of Elm Creek High School. Cavenee is a player of opportunity. She works hard on both sides of the floor, while always making herself available to the play. In the few contests of Cavenee that I had the opportunity to watch, she was moving around the perimeter, making the most of her opportunities. In a program and on a team that prides themselves on playing TEAM basketball, they do have some players that standout above most. It was only Cavenee’s Freshman season so she is still very young but she has a base to build on. She put together a solid Freshman campaign and I hope that leads to to more successes in the near future.
Foundation and coordination. These are the two would I would use to describe Addison Wysocki Addison Wysocki 5’6″ | SG Elba | 2027 NE and her game on the hardwood at this moment. Wysocki is her Elba High School team’s engine and motor. When she goes, they go. This past season Wysocki took the floor as a Freshman and helped lead her team in a lot of their postive statistical categories. She scored in waves, rebounded on both offense and defense, and produce in other little ways each and every contest. If we are talking about prospects that work hard, leave it all on the court, and listen to what their coaches/teammtes are saying, Wysocki is in that conversation. She plays the middle of her teams 2-3 on defense, while running a lot of her team’s offense. I’m going to have to step in to see this team some more over the next year but as of right now, Wysocki is definitely doing what she can.
Grace Yrkoski Grace Yrkoski SF Twin River | 2027 NE and her game stand out to everyone watching not because of her scoring ability but because of everything else she does. Don’t get me wrong. Yrkoski is going to get her own in the Scoring department but her best ability is Rebounding and getting back on defense. Whenever a shot goes up, she is the first to attack the glass on offense or to start boxing out of defense. After she gets the rebound, she does a great job squaring up to the middle of the floor and looking for her outlet pass. Wherever it may be. There is obviously a good amount of skill here but another main reason that Yrkoski succeeds is because of her natural athletic ability and discipline. She knows to stay down when others drive against her, only jumping when she is 100% certain that her opponent is going to attempt a shot. All in all, it’s easy to say that defense can win championships but to go out and demonstrate it each night is impressive. That’s what we had here with Yrkoski this winter and I can’t wait to see more.
A prospect that displayed a great “feel” for the game this past season out of the 2027 Class was PG, Paige Sprenger Paige Sprenger PG Valentine | 2027 NE of Valentine High School. Sprenger is quick, smart, and savvy when it comes to her overall play-style. She plays the top of her teams zone defense but she isn’t afraid to mix it up down-low with bigger players if need be. When she is coming down the court offensively, you better watch out. She has demonstrated the ability to get downhill in a hurry, usually finishing the possession with a bucket at the rim or a foul, giving her some free throws at the line. This team had their ups and downs this Winter but a bright spot for them was the play of Sprenger. She is going to be a PG we talk about quite a bit over the next few seasons if she stays on the path she is currently on.
Gracyn Painter Gracyn Painter 5’6″ | PG Ainsworth | 2027 NE was one of the most efficient players out of the Freshman Class this season at the Varsity level throughout Nebraska. Each game that she took the floor, her team might not have won but they gave it a respectable effort and Painter put up some noteworthy numbers in the meantime. Sometimes you have to trust the process and understand that things aren’t going to come together all at once. This program does some really good things and they put together some complete games this last season. If they can take that momentum and use Painter as a building block moving into the future, they should be sitting in a comfortable position soon enough. There is a lot of positives to work off of here and if they do it the right way, everyone is going to be successful before everything is said and done.
