The 17U and 16U national teams are particularly intriguing to me and are going to be difficult to beat. Let’s take a look at some of the players who do a little bit of everything.
Kara Brinkley’s East Burke team is continuing their undefeated season, and you can see why with the way she has improved in pretty much every statistical category since her already impressive freshman season last year. She can score on all levels on offense doing the work without the ball to get the open look, or she can score off the dribble attacking the basket battling contact. She gets inside going after rebounds on both ends of the court making plays off of these right away, and she is sure to grab some steals away from her opponents.
Highlights
Jaiden Thompson is certainly a leader for her Union Academy group handling the ball, finding the open lanes, and scoring at the rim. She can make plays off offensive sets, or she can push the tempo to get some fast break points. Her quickness allows her to get to the basket easily or stop on a dime to pull up for the shot. She brings that toughness to defense, too, being able to strip the ball and push it the other direction.
Alexis Shehan recently hit her 500th rebound with Lake Norman because she does it well on both ends. She gets inside to end the possession of her opponents on defense, and she knows how to catch the rebound, make an adjustment, and score on offense. She is constantly moving on the floor flashing across the paint making the defense lose her to get the open look. Her length is an asset on defense knocking the ball away.
Highlights
Sophia Zoerb has been known as a shooter throughout her high school career so far as she certainly does that well around the perimeter. She doesn’t just have to wait for the opening around the arc, though, as she can flash to the block staying ready for the pass and shot. She doesn’t mind battling inside to get into position on offense or preventing an opponent from getting the easy pass on defense. She will find ways to grab a steal and take it the other direction for a fast break.
