Powers Catholic, Alma, Freeland, and 2022 state finalist Frankenmuth make up the bracket. Let’s take a closer look at these matchups and the impact players who will be counted on to lead the way.
Alma (19-5) vs. Flint Powers Catholic (21-3) 5:30 PM, Alma HS
Alma has the advantage of playing at home tonight as they host a Powers Catholic team whose only losses have been to Grand Blanc, Midland Dow, and Ypsi Arbor Prep. Alma does have a quality win against Freeland this season and will need to play their best basketball to keep up with this fast-paced Powers team. Both teams finished third in their conferences this season.
Freeland (21-3) vs. Frankenmuth (22-2) 7 PM, Alma HS
Two of Freeland’s three losses came against Frankenmuth this season: a combined 7 points. Teams like Howell and Haslett won in the playoffs despite losing twice to the same opponent during the regular season; I wonder if Freeland can do the same. Frankenmuth won the Tri-Valley Conference Red with an undefeated record in league play. Their only losses this season came against two State champion level opponents in Rockford and Goodrich. The third game should be an exciting matchup that I am eager to watch.
Impact Players
Kendyl Smith Kendyl Smith 5’9″ | PG Flint Powers Catholic | 2026 State MI received the second most votes for first team in the SVL; she averaged 19 pts, 7 reb, 5 ast & 3 stls in league games for Powers. She can make any pass on the court & use whatever dribble needed to alleviate pressure. Her shooting range & downhill finishing ability make her nearly impossible to guard straight up.
Amaya Smith Amaya Smith PG Powers Catholic | 2024 State MI sets the tone for Powers on the defensive end. She’s a quick guard whose pressure and toughness make her a lock down defender. Amaya also has deep range from 3 to lead Powers offensively in any game. She will be a key factor if Powers is going to make it out of the regional round.
Karie Keefer Karie Keefer 5’8″ | PG Freeland | 2025 State MI is an outstanding guard for Freeland and has proven how dynamic of a scorer she is all season. Karie has the knock down outside shooting and finishing moves to cause indigestion for any defense. Karie can put up big numbers against top teams; she had 33 pts in a win against Chelsea. If she can outscore Frankenmuths top guards, her team could upset tonight.
Highlights
Clare Conzelmann Clare Conzelmann 5’9″ | CG Frankenmuth | 2025 State MI contributes offensively and defensively for Frankenmuth. She creates points using her length to deflect passes and if you give her space Clare will knock down outside shots in a hurry. She has played well against Freeland previously and will need to do so again tonight for the Eagles to advance in the tournament.
Highlights
Gracie Mellinger Gracie Mellinger 5’5″ | CG Alma | 2025 State MI has the ability to put up big offensive numbers for Alma. She scored 25 pts with 10 boards against Swan Valley and converted a clutch game winning left handed layup through a foul, then hit the free throw to beat Garber. Gracie will need a heroic performance to beat Powers best guards tonight.
