Several of Western Oklahoma's best teams were gathered in Kingfisher this past week as Prep Team Camps got underway. I saw some very talented guards in action. Also was able to see a very good and lightning quick Quinton team in action briefly, hope to catch them again this summer. My favorite game I was able to catch was a 5A vs. B matchup between Midwest City and Lomega. It was nice to see Lomega play a team as athletic and physical as Midwest City, and it is always nice to see big schools have to deal with a caliber of press that they weren't expecting from a school that only has 68 students in the entire high school.

I got two scoops of Walker this week, as my team had to play her at Cordell Summer League. I've seen her at the Hive a few times with her Club team as well so she is definitely putting the time in this summer. Borderline flashy player, teammates have to have their head on a swivel to be ready for some of the passes she cooks up. Had to warn my team that our 1-3-1 better rotate well or she would find players with diagonal passes that most point guards can't make. Gets into the paint on the drive really well, and always has options once she gets there.

Great defensive instincts, but really shines on offense. As a high school coach myself I just imagined how happy I would be every time the ball got in her hands. Shoots great off the dribble, has a nice inside-out dribble that sets stuff up , can knock down the 3 as well.

Do-it-all point guard for Kingfisher really stood out to me. Quick team with a lot of length, gave teams a lot of trouble with their press, which always features a couple 5-11 girls disrupting the initial pass. Mattie sets the pace for them offensively, and is capable of hitting pull up 3's in transition. Heated up and came down and hit two in a row in one of the afternoon session games.

Lomega's press as always is a joy to watch, not so much to coach against. Their players just know where to be and before you know it have turned what you thought was a routine pass into a layup. Paige is able to release for layups at an elite level. Lomega gets a steal, Paige is at the rim. Couldn't believe how many layups she gets for her size. Very solid, quick point guard.

Tall guard is able to create matchup problems for defenders. Is a pass-first player, so if you play her too close she's going to be able to find one of Lomega's talented inside players, and if you give her too much space she has a quick release from three. Takes some risks on passes, but expect those to be assists come March at the State Tournament. A key part of Lomega's press as she reads passing lanes very well.
