Leadership. Is it in you? Are you born with it? Is it a learned behavior? When I think of leaders, I think of someone who can rally the troops. Some don't necessarily do it vocally, but it is by their actions. They step up to the occasion, putting their team on their backs. Leaders can come in all shapes, sizes, forms, possessions, ect. When I personally think of leaders, I think of point guards who can effectively run an offensive. They echo the call of the coach and execute the set to perfection. Sound familiar? Well in this state, we have a lot of PGs who can do just that.

So I dug deep and was just thinking, who are some of the most effective leaders who are point guards in this state? Now I know this is subjective, but this was one of the hardest questions to answer. Coaches ask different things from different positions. For example, at Bradley Central, the PG isn't the primary scorer. However at Hutchison, their PG might be the primary scorer. So that's what I mean by subjective, coaches ask different things of their players. Well, I had to define what I like in PG who possesses leadership. I want someone who effectively communicates with their teammates. I want them to display leadership, be vocal, and demand accountability. I want them to execute the action or set, give high five, turn around and do it again. I want someone with poise, someone who can decipher something and relay what they're seeing to the coaching staff. Qualities like this I believe make an effective PG a leader.

Here are just a few girls from around the state who come to mind. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of others, but here are just a few who tip the scale.

[player_tooltip player_id='409074' first='Avary' last='Brewer'] (5'8/Sr./PG/ Bradley Central)- The Samford commit is one of the best in the state. She knows how to effectively execute an offense. Amazing court awareness, she is poised with the ball, letting things develop, hitting her teammates on time and in stride. She too can score the basketball, but doesn't force the issue. She does her job and contributes in ways that don't always show up in statistical categories. This kid is solid and she leaves it all out on the court every time she laces up her shoes.

[player_tooltip player_id='509171' first='Tiara' last='Spencer'] (5'7/Jr./PG/Lebanon)- Evolved. I think over time her game has evolved and she has settled down into her niche. This kid can play and can score it in so many ways. Drive to the hoop, pull it from 3, I love how she pushes the ball in transition. What I do like is she doesn't force the issue, knowing when to set up a play or continue on in attack mode. She defends, she dabs up her teammates. It looks like she is out there having fun and enjoying the moment. Tiara is a kid who is battle tested. She is always willing and ready to step up to any challenge. Her teammates feed off her energy and her ability to rise to the occasion helps set her apart from others. Solid prospect who will be a nice addition at the next level.

[player_tooltip player_id='408999' first='McCall' last='Sims'] (5'7/Sr./PG/ Westview)- Tennessee softball commit who is the ultimate competitor. She is a dual sport athlete who is the ultimate leader. Vocal, poised, she knows how to get in and out of sets to put her club at an advantage. She works hard off the floor, in both the weight room and classroom. Translate that to the floor, and she is right there, front and center, leading the blue and gold. She's been doing this for a long time and I foresee her continuing to lead her Westview team to bigger heights this upcoming year.

Lazavionna Hawkins (5'6/Sr./PG/ Goodpasture)- As senior season loads for her, I think last year was the year where she springboarded herself into so many different conversations. This kid is a tough, heady basketball player who can score the rock, but draws the attention of opponents that frees up teammates on the perimeter or in the dunker spots. She brings energy and passion to the floor and I love the way she just comes out and looks to bring it against whoever opponent may be. A fearless competitor, I see her teammates following her example and the whole level of play from everyone turns it up a notch. A solid prospect who will be a steal for any program at the next level.

[player_tooltip player_id='513233' first='Natalya' last='Hodge'] (5'7/Jr./ PG/ Bearden)- One of the most sought after PGs in the state from D1 schools, Natalya is legit as they come. A fearless competitor who will fight tooth and nail to the end. She is an effective communicator, who can run an offense, but also go and get a bucket if need be. From deep or getting to the paint, her ability to finagle herself through the defense is pretty impressive. Also, don't sleep on her defense, she will lock up the opposition in a heartbeat. Ever since freshman year, this kid has been getting it done. Her game has evolved, getting better and better every time she steps onto the court. Doesn't matter if it's high school season or travel ball season, this girl is looking to come out and eviscerate the opposition. A great prospect who is going to be a big deal at the next level.
