Day 2 of the State Championship rounds saw some heavy hitters match up against one another. Teams from both the 1A and 4A divisions of the public school sector got after it as they looked to advance. Focusing on the 4A division, you could say there were so many analogies that could have been tied to each of the contests. David vs. Goliath. A heavyweight boxing match that could go twelve rounds. My point is that the teams in this division have been plummeting teams throughout the year, and now they square off against each other.

Here are a few storylines that could be tagged with each of the matchups.

Cookeville vs. Page

Two teams are riding high coming into the matchup. Page had been on an impressive winning streak while Cookeville has been playing some pretty good ball collectively coming into the day. Though Cookeville lost to Bradley Central in region play, it bounced back, taking care of business to reach the Glass House. Page, displaying an impressive inside-and-out attack, rolled through the competition. These two meeting up kick-started the 4A division.

Final score: Cookeville 55-Page 47

Bartlett vs. Bearden

Both teams, which possess D1 ballplayers, play with speed and pride themselves on defense. Both are vets when it comes to this tournament, as they punch their ticket to Murfreesboro every year. This game was a back-and-forth matchup that came down to defense and rebounding.

Final Score: Bartlett 77-Bearden 73

Sevier Co. vs. Bradley Central

3x state champs vs. an up-and-coming punch that plays hard together. This would probably be considered the David vs. Goliath matchup of the tournament. Though one would have thought the latter would have just rolled on through, one club played inspired basketball and wouldn't be denied the opportunity to create history.

Final Score: Sevier Co. 52- Bradley Central 34

Blackman vs. Collierville

Two schools that possess impressive guard play. Both had successful regular seasons, displaying tenacious defense, creative playmaking, and the ability to knock down clutch shots. These two also have hoopers that can dazzle the crowd using their athleticism to get to favorable spots. In the end, the hometown prevailed, knocking off a solid up-and-coming team.

Final score: Blackman 54- Collierville 30

Without giving too much detail of how the game went possession by possession, you could clearly see that this class had a talented field of ballclubs. Though the winning team did what they did to advance, those who lost, on any other day, it could have been a different story, and they would have been on the winning end. However, the teams that did advance set themselves up to make history as a new champion will be crowned in this classification.

Here are some standouts from Day 2 at the state championship round in the 4A classification.

Playing in her last go round of bringing a trophy back to Cookeville, this sensational senior wouldn't be denied. She's been here before and knew what it would take to climb over the mountain top. She finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, putting her club in position to advance. She was 10-13 from the free-throw line and knocked some clutch ones down the stretch. This heady floor general knew what her club needed, and she stepped it up to help them move on.

Was the sparkplug for her squad as she came off the bench and played some major minutes. Not only did she contribute defensively, slowing the Lady Patriot attack, but she also finished around the paint with 16 points. Look for her to continue to provide quality depth for the Lady Cavaliers throughout the tournament.

Came off the bench and provided the spark Bartlett needed. Scoring 23 points and grabbing 9 boards, she was the leading catalyst in those categories for her club. Playing inspired basketball, she went to work, making it difficult for Bearden to stop her. Getting to her spot, hit clutch shots when her team needed them, and she impacted the game when her team needed a bucket. A talented kid who did her thing as her club took down a hot Bearden team.

Steady on the inside, her length was a problem as she was physical down low. She brought it finishing around the rim and was truly a linchpin for her club. 18 points and 7 boards, she dominated the painted areas on both ends of the floor. This talented kid was what Bartlett needed to put down a good Bearden team. A talented kid who is going to be a solid piece at the next level.

Rosie the Rivetter, she can do all things. 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 3 steals, she led the club all across the board as she helped take down the Lady Bearettes. She was big-time on the inside as she drew a tough assignment of neutralizing the painted area. She's a hustler, one who plays with relentless energy. I have mentioned before that she always makes the extra effort, and she did so during this game. A talented kid who not only increased her stock but helped make history as her club defeated the 3x state champs.

The cat's out of the bag, and this girl is the truth. Finishing with 22 points and 18 boards, this athletic combo guard couldn't be slowed down one bit. Playing against some talented girls from Collierville, she showed she is the next Blackman guard to be recognized with. Going toe to toe with her opponent, she went at them aggressively, finishing countless times. This young lady is legit and one that will be highly sought after before it's all said and done.
