The class of 2027 came in on a Sunday afternoon and made their mark at the Sophomore ID event. Between the infamous Simmie Colson (THERE IS NO HIM as stated by him) and myself, each player was evaluated. Let's start with the ladies of team 4!

The first possession after tipoff, Mellanson had everyone in the gym oohing and ahhing with a crafty reverse finish to kiss the ball off of the glass. She uses her size to play larger than life and can sneak in for some impressive finishes. She plays with a motor and as a true point guard she feels at home with the ball in her hands.

Velasquez possess a solid jump shot, meaning she gets up and off the ground when she shoots. Hustle player and knows how to stay wide running the lanes in transition, as she sprints down the floor and spots up and elevates for the three point shot from the wing.

Shooter-slasher. Once she has the inside step on the defender, she is blowing by them to get all the way to the basket or jump stop in the lane for a smooth pull up shot.

Mia's sweet spot is from the corner pocket 3. She fully understands how to play help defense and get off her man to prevent easy baskets.

Scrappy player! She is not afraid to get on the boards or bang with the bigs. Not a good to underestimate Goynes size as she will make her presence felt in the paint.

Johnson put solid pressure on arguably the toughest player at the event. And she also took her to the basket for and one finishes on the other end. And she made it look easy! Johnson is definitely a two way player and it was refreshing seeing a player go hard on both ends, as it seems forgotten that defense can be highlighted at a showcase as well.

Consistently finds her place in the right place at the right time. Luck? I think not. This is what you call high basketball IQ when it comes to positioning in the paint. This allows her to STAY on the boards, and her presence is felt! Outside the paint, she possessed tight ball handles and great reads off a ball screen to set her teammates up for easy buckets.

Earnest has a quiet demeanor on the court but very high basketball IQ. She really understands spacing as she knows when to work the perimeter and when to post on a smaller defender. She did a great job of jumping in and stopping the ball in transition, leading to deflections or turnovers.

Plays with power. When she catches hight and beats her man off the dribble, she's like a truck coming through the lane but with a soft finish off the glass. This means her attack is polished and she has body control.
