Every good team needs standout role players that buy-in and excel at their jobs. In this article, I want to highlight players who do the little things for their team, work hard, make tough plays, play with heart, and make their teammates better. Let us look at the guys that need more attention!

A Role Player in basketball is a team member who focuses on fulfilling a specific function or set of responsibilities to support the team's overall success. Role players excel in areas like defense, rebounding, passing, and/or providing energy off the bench. Their contributions may not always appear prominently in the box score, but their specialized skills and consistency are critical to the team's performance. Role players often adapt to the needs of the team, making them essential in achieving balance and cohesion on the court.

[player_tooltip player_id='641207' first='Abby' last='Fosland'] (2026) |5'10 G| Bismarck Century

Abby's ability to make solid decisions, defend the other team's best player, and balance her skills between creating her own shot and setting up her teammates make her a great role player. She adapts to the needs of her team and executes effectively in crucial situations. Fosland makes the extra pass to create open shots for her teammates, provides solid defensive effort, and displays leadership qualities both during practice and games. These intangible contributions elevate the team's performance.

Addison Weigel (2026) |5'5 G| Bismarck Century

Weigel is a great role player for several reasons: Addison's ability to excel in multiple aspects of the game, such as being a solid defender, handling the basketball effectively, and knocking down open shots, showcases her versatility. Addison is learning to play the role of a "floor general." She takes charge of orchestrating the offense, ensuring the ball moves efficiently and teammates are set up for success. Her solid defensive skills further emphasize her importance as a two-way player.

[player_tooltip player_id='1097251' first='Amber' last='McCrory'] (2025) |5'4 G| Linton/HMB

She is one of the best role players coach Schirado has ever been around. Amber's understanding and embrace of her role are crucial to the Linton-HMB Lions girl's basketball team's success. She knows exactly what is expected of her and focuses on doing those things at a high level, whether it's playing tough defense, communicating with her teammates, or making smart plays that don't always show up on the stat sheet. Her willingness to prioritize the team's needs over individual recognition sets an example for others and helps create a strong, unselfish team culture. By fully embracing her role, Amber ensures that in every game she's contributing in meaningful ways that help the team succeed.

[player_tooltip player_id='1057804' first='Bekah' last='Kegley'] (2025) |5'8 F| Central Cass

She is an undersized post who does the dirty work. Bekah defends the opposing team's top post player and she grabs a ton of rebounds. She knows every single play and knows what every single person on th team needs to do. Kegley calls out BLOBs and always is the throw-in girl. Bekah also calls out the other team's defense and gets tons of steals because she knows the other teams play better than they do.

Isabella Engstrom (2026) |5'9 F| Benson County

She does all of the little things that don't always show up on the stat sheet. Isabella doesn't take a lot of shots for the Wildcats but has a nice mid-range jump shot that she can knock down if she's left open. She is one of the top rebounders and plays great disciplined defense. Engstrom is also responsible for getting the ball in quickly so the Wildcats can get into their transition offense, which is a huge part of Benson County's game. Every day Isabella comes to practice with a great attitude and works hard to be exceptional in her role.

[player_tooltip player_id='935880' first='Josie' last='Biteler'] (2028) |5'9 G| Sioux Falls Washington

Biteler is a freshman who is coming into her own. She comes off the bench and plays positions 1-3. As a freshman, she shows a lot of court awareness offensively and defensively. Josie is able to take and make shots but is also very patient, unselfish and shares the ball with her teammates. She has a bright future in basketball.

[player_tooltip player_id='1118581' first='KC' last='Hong'] (2026) |5'7 G/F| Hillsboro/Central Valley

Hong is the first girl off the bench. She gives the Burros energy when they need it most. KC can play any position guard or post. She's probably HCV's best all-around player and her coming off the bench gives them a great spark!

[player_tooltip player_id='1056256' first='Logyn' last='Simpson'] (2027) |5'7 G| Bottineau

Simpson is Bottineau's key role player right now. Logyn is their best on-the-ball defender and expends a ton of energy taking pride in this. She by far tries and takes the most charges on the team. Simpson was recently put in charge of "running" the offense, she makes sure everyone is where they need to be and calls out plays. That is not an easy task for a sophomore playing with mostly seniors and a junior!

MacKenzie Schreiber (2026) |5'6 G| Rapid City Stevens

Schreiber is playing well to start the season. She is a great role player because she does what is asked of her. MacKenzie plays defense, takes care of the ball, and shoots the basketball when she is open. Through 3 games, she is shooting 75% from 2 point range and 46% from 3 point range.

[player_tooltip player_id='342165' first='Megan' last='Hjelmstad'] (2025) |5'6 G| Horace

Megan is an amazing example of a great teammate. She always puts the team first and is always willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win. She is a skilled player who can do a lot of positive things on the court. She is a capable scorer, a very good defender, a terrific passer, and she takes pride in doing the little things that help her team win. Megan loves assists because she loves helping her teammates be successful. Her leadership is her greatest strength, and her leadership has a huge positive impact on the Mustangs. Hjelmstad has earned the respect of all of her teammates because they know they have her support, she is always there for them, and they know she truly cares about them.

McKenzie Flottmeyer (2026) |5'7 F| Pierre

Flottmeyer is always willing to do whatever the team needs to be at their best. She is always coachable and responds to both praise and corrective feedback equally as a means to improvement. McKenzie plays a vital role on both JV and Varsity. She is counted on to bring energy and outstanding defense. Against Rapid City, she came in to guard their best player and did exactly what was asked, which helped spark the team. She is awesome on the court but also has a positive attitude and is always looking to encourage her teammates. McKenzie brings the same work ethic every day to practice which helps her team improve on a daily basis! The sign of a great teammate is one that everyone wants her on their team but doesn't want to play against her. McKenzie competes hard and does so in a way that sets an example for others to follow.

McKenzie Ptacek (2027) |5'3 G| Hillsboro/Central Valley

Ptacek is a sophomore, but she's a born leader! McKenzie always keeps the girls upbeat and gives the Burros constant energy. She's the first one to praise a teammate for doing something good and also the first one to lift someone up for making a mistake.

[player_tooltip player_id='1097380' first='Molly' last='Moen'] (2026) |5'8 G| Park River-Fordville-Lankin

She has been a great role player for the Aggies this year off the bench. She usually comes in to guard a top scorer from the other team. Molly is really starting to flourish defensively in her role. In one early season game, PRFL needed to match up with a taller player who does it all offensively and she answered the call and played exceptionally well in that spot. Moen was able to play great pressure defense on the perimeter to limit any open looks, but also contained dribble penetration and held her own when they tried to move inside on her. Molly was is defensive catalyst who gets multiple stops and extends leads, she will help us win many games this season. Molly is always ready when called upon to come in and give her teammates everything she has to help get the win. Moen will do whatever it takes, her teammates and coaches appreciate her attitude and effort.

Morgan Torr (2026) |5'7 F| Garrison

Torr has been coming off the bench (easily could be starting) and has embraced her role. She brings the Troopers energy and is always willing to sacrifice herself for her team. Morgan takes charges, dives for loose balls, and always comes away with the tough rebound. She is Garrison's energizer bunny and the Troopers are happy she is on their team!

[player_tooltip player_id='1052169' first='Tierney' last='Schramm'] (2025) |5'10 F| Sioux Falls Washington

Schramm is a senior who does a lot of dirty work for the Warriors. She defends bigger players in the post, rebounds, and runs the floor. Offensively she has to play on the perimeter where she does a good job of sharing the ball with teammates and helping them get great shots.
