Nestled down interstate 65, southwest just above the Alabama state line, lies Waye Co. The black and gold Lady Wildcats have been a formiddle program reaching the state final four the past three years. Twice, they have been in the championship game, but the hardware has eluded them. This year, there could be a different chapter written with a favorable ending.

The Lady Wildcats of Wayne County are fierce. Tough, hard-nosed kids who play the game face and efficiently. They are technicians in their craft and figure out ways to carve up the opposition, exploiting their weaknesses. They can do it from the arc, pound it inside, neutralize an opponent's offensive game, and pretty much own the interior on both ends of the floor. They do everything well and do it right, going back to my thoughts on them being technicians at what they do. These kids are fundamentally sound and will take their district by storm.

When you have one of the top players in the state to go along with others who are top notch contributors, the games seem easy as these young ladies go hard in practice. Detail oriented, they take nothing for granted. They put on a show for their fans, in turn their fans show up and show out wherever the game is played. Dynasty? Even though the hardware hasn't presented itself yet, this club is one of the toughest in the state. Look for this team to win the district, go back to state, and contend for a title that will hopefully end up back in Waynesboro. They have the pieces to do so and the attitude to get the job done. Look for this team to come out strong out of the gates and ready to take on both district and non conference foes.

Here are some standouts for the Lady Wildcats.

Miss Tennessee basketball winner last season could potentially win it again as well this season. This kid is phenomenal at anchoring the middle for the Lady Wildcats. A walking double-double, she owns the interior, pounding the paint and knocking down mid-range jumpers. She is effective and efficient, using the glass to help put the ball in the net. What I love most about her game is that she does her work on the defensive end as well. Blocking shots, eliminating teams to one shot attempt by collecting boards. The Glass House in Murfreesboro is not strange territory to this young lady. She has been there every year since she started high school and it will be her future home as she has committed to play for the Lady Blue Raiders next season. Look for Blair to attend to some unfinished business with her team while racking up accolades along the way. Tough, hard nose kid who is a great two-way player.

Tough kid who can fill it up. She can pull it from the arc, or get down hill and finish in the paint. She just plays the game hard, leaving nothing to chance, and giving it all she has. This kid had a great travel ball season and has been steady, even keel, each season she has played in the high school ranks. Emma is no stranger to the bottom of the net, as scoring is her specialty. She forms a nice 1-2 punch with her and Blair, but Emma herself has some shiftiness to her game. Look for her to come out with that same energy and momentum she had this summer and be a leading catalyst for this squad. She is solid on both ends of the floor and plays with a chip on her shoulder. An overlooked prospect who has a solid game.

Another big who will anchor the middle along with Blair. A part of the twin towers moniker, it's like Wayne Co. is built like the San Antonio Spurs with David Robinson and Tim Duncan back in the day. Ava is a game changer in her way and his kid can get it done inside the perimeter in more ways than one. Nice in the screen game, money from block to block, elbow, and short corner areas, this kid is a big time contributor on the offensive end. Defensively, she has nice footwork that enables her to stay in front of the opposition, blocking shots, gathering boards. Look for this kid to play a big role this season and then take the reins of anchoring the middle the next two years. Solid kid with huge upside.

Fresh face to the program. Look for her to step in and be a solid option coming off the bench for the Lady Wildcats. This kid plays hard and will contribute on both ends of the floor. Her minutes might be marginal at first, but once she gets comfortable with the speed of the game, look for her to come in and dazzle the crowd and earn the trust of her teammates with her style of play. Solid kid with a bright future.
