While wintry weather across the Upstate and Midlands took a toll on the state's basketball schedule, the basketball version of the Bridge Bowl still went off without a hitch.

Both Bluffton and Hilton Head Island were in search of their first victories in region play this season after both the Bobcats and Seahawks 6-AAAA slates got off to rocky starts. The homestanding Seahawks were on the receiving end of a 65-29 defeat at 4A powerhouse Bishop England on Tuesday while Bluffton suffered a 50-37 loss at home to Beaufort.

On paper, Bluffton (6-6) would be seen as the favorite because of Hilton Head Island's 2-9 mark but the Seahawks have played mostly Georgia teams with only three of its contests (Sumter, twice vs. Hilton Head Prep) being against in-state foes prior to region play.

Prior to Friday night's game, it had been six seasons since the Seahawks last picked up a win over the Bobcats. While the story across the Palmetto State was cold weather, Hilton Head Island was successful in snapping its cold spell against Bluffton by its first region win of the 2024-25 campaign. The final score was 42-29 over the Bobcats.

Records

The win also runs the Seahawks' overall mark to 3-9 while that of the Bobcats drops to 6-7 along with its 0-2 region showing.

Remember What Happened Last Time?

Bluffton and Hilton Head Island met on three occasions last season with the Bobcats prevailing on all three occasions. The Bobcats picked up a 57-36 win on Nov. 21, a 56-37 victory on Jan. 12 and in a 51-35 decision on Jan. 26.

Jan. 11, 2019 was the last time the Seahawks picked up a win over the Bobcats (34-19 at Hilton Head Island). Bluffton had won their last 12 consecutive contests with Hilton Head Island entering Friday's play.

Quarter-By-Quarter

A defensive-centric opening frame would see Bluffton and Hilton Head Island match each other point for point. With one frame in the books, the 12 points scored between the Bobcats and Seahawks were evenly distributed at six apiece.

The low-scoring theme continued into the second quarter with both teams looking to out-defend each other. With both teams entering their respective locker rooms to discuss second-half strategy, Hilton Head Island assumed a 14-11 edge over Bluffton.

It was all Hilton Head Island, all the time in the third quarter. The Seahawks outscored the Bobcats by a margin of 11-2 and would enter the third quarter leading by a score of 25-13 over Bluffton.

The Bobcats put together a ferocious comeback in the fourth quarter but the Seahawks managed to make enough plays to hold Bluffton off. When the final buzzer sounded, Hilton Head Island picked up the big region win – and against its Bridge Bowl rival of all teams.

Leah Jackson may not have been part of Hilton Head Island's starting five but she was a huge reason for the Seahawks victory. She finished with 23 points. Jackson tallied 19 of her 23 in the second half.

[player_tooltip player_id='378103' first='Amirah' last='Brown'] was the leading scorer for Bluffton with seven points (only one made field goal) but she experienced uncharacteristic struggles. Brown fouled out in the fourth quarter and picked up her fourth foul before the close of the third quarter. She did make things difficult for Hilton Head Island on defense by preventing layups – particularly early in the game.

Up Next

Bluffton had little time to rest as the Bobcats would travel the following day to meet up with 1A Whale Branch. The same was true for Hilton Head Island which would travel across the Savannah River to Georgia to meet up with St. Andrews.

Seahawks fans not only had plenty to cheer for from their girls team but also their boys team. Hilton Head Island's varsity teams were successful in defending the next against Bluffton when the Seahawks boys defeated the Bobcats boys by a final of 65-55.
