A pair of teams looking to further brighten their 1A state tournament prospects did battle this past Thursday in the CSRA.

One of those teams – North – began Region 3-A play having won six of seven games but entered Thursday's matchup with a pair of losses to the tough teams that are Hunter-Kinard-Tyler and Williston-Elko.

The other – Ridge Spring-Monetta – entered Thursday's play in the throes of a five-game winning streak. In fact, since the Trojans suffered a blowout loss at the hands of sixth-ranked Bamberg-Ehrhardt at the Blackville-Hilda Hawk Invitational, Ridge Spring-Monetta had won six of its previous seven contests.

Thursday's get-together of 3-A region rivals would go the way of North which earned a 47-28 victory over Ridge Spring-Monetta.

Records

The win for North increases its overall mark to 11-8 and 7-3 against Region 3-A opponents. Ridge Spring-Monetta drops to 11-7 and a 5-3 showing for its region schedule.

Remember What Happened Last Time?

Early February last season was when North and Ridge Spring-Monetta last shared the same court together. That contest would see the Eagles pull off a close 40-37 win over the Trojans.

Quarter-By-Quarter

The first few minutes of the first quarter told the story of a game that would be close between these region combatants. That was before North closed the frame with a 9-0 run. With one in the books, the Eagles led the Trojans of Ridge Spring-Monetta by a margin of 15-5.

Early in the second quarter, that North lead grew to 18-5 before an 8-0 Ridge Spring-Monetta run trimmed the deficit to 18-13 along with prompting a timeout from the Eagles. North managed to push the lead back out into double-digits and it was a 26-14 Eagles advantage at the break.

What was a 12-point North margin at the break would balloon to 17 by the time the third quarter had concluded. With eight minutes remaining, the Eagles' advantage was 39-22 over the Trojans.

The longer the quarter wore on, the more it became apparent that North – which was ranked fifth in the most recent 1A coaches' poll – would get back on the right track. The Eagles would indeed complete the 47-28 victory.
