Coming off the Christmas break can sometimes be tough for teams. You're kind of out of routine with school being out, families have gotten together and traveled, the weather has changed from cold to colder, kids can be all out of sorts because they are adjusting to a new normal per se. Since the calendar has turned, I have been able to take in some games around the mid-state and have been pretty impressed with what I have seen thus far in 2025. For one, things have gotten tough because of district play. Secondly, no matter the classification, girls are stepping up and earning the respect of their peers by their style of play. I am not saying everyone is a D1 player, but there is plenty of collegiate basketball material out there for sure.

What I love about this time of year is the rivalries.Every game is tighter as teams battle it out each possession. Every game means more as clubs jockey for position in the standings. You may occasionally see the whacky big time scoring differential, but chalk that up to an off shooting night. All games from here on out will be physical and tough. It may be cold outside, but tons of players are heating up the gyms.

Here are some names who are heating it up despite the cold outside.

She's on a tear. This kid's confidence is riding high and she is making every team feel her wrath. Had a great showing over the holidays in Tampa and has brought those warm weather vibes back to the Ville with her style of play. She's a solid two-way player who just gets after it. From being on the boards to putting the ball in the net, she has attracted the eyes of collegiate coaches and the offers are starting to roll in. Keep an eye on this kid as she continues to thrive.

Shifty guard who has a lot of wiggle, she can easily get to the cup and finish with a lay. The lefty guard plays with poise and can deliver times to her teammates. I love her ability to push the ball in transition, creating pressure on teams to stop them. Oftentimes scenarios like these have forced teams to scrabble and have given the Lady Tigers favorable mismatches to exploit. Nori can score it on all three levels, but one attribute that is standing out is her ability to lock up on the defensive end. A motored up kid who is solid on both ends of the floor.

Stretch 4 who is creating havoc on the floor. Talk about someone who has elevated her game, coming off a serious injury that kept her out of the season last year, this kid has risen to another level. She's been clutch by knocking down 3s from the arc, driving to the paint and finishing, locking up on the defensive end by blocking shots and owning the boards. This kid has given the Lady Lions of CPA a spark. What most need to honor is her ability to penetrate and get in the lane. She has the handles most bigs her size don't have. Solid kid who is a big time contributor.

Please remember the name because this 8th grader has been playing some big time minutes. Suiting up for the Lady Tigers of Ensworth, she has been coming in and giving this ball club a spark. Plays sound defensively, her offensive game has been speaking volumes as of late. Her ability to see the floor and distribute, knock down the open 3s, and attack gaps to finish at the rim is pretty impressive. She has great court awareness and plays with poise. In my opinion, she's fit right in and has played at a high level in a tough league. Mark my words, this kid is special and as her confidence grows, expect her to thrive and dominate the competition.

The Quinnipiac signee is leaving a lasting impression before she exits TSSAA basketball. This self made ball player is a gym rat who is one of the toughest around. Her ability to create is uncanny, however it's the little things she does that set her apart from her peers. Yes, her scoring is what stays etched in everyone's minds, but for me it's her ability to defend and contribute on the boards. She might be averaging thirty but is darn near close to grabbing double digit boards on a nightly basis. In my opinion , that's pretty impressive and worthy of Miss Tennessee conversation ( I don't have a dog in that fight, sorry). Super talented kid who is a must see at the box office.
