Desert Vista/Xavier Notes

On Tuesday February 4th the Desert Vista Thunder traveled to Central Phoenix to take on the Xavier Gators. The game was a back-and-forth match as both teams made it difficult for the other to get going offensively. At the end of regulation, the game was tied so they needed an extra four minutes of action to decide the winner. In the end Xavier pulled away and secured the win 44-36.   Here I take a look at a few of the standouts from the game      The nationally ranked forward commanded a bunch of attention and rightfully so. Every time she touched the ball in the paint, she had two and sometimes three defenders surrounding her. She still managed to finish with a double double.     Cherri is another nationally ranked player who garnered a lot of attention. Despite having help defense focused on her she still found some holes to split and attack against. She displayed the crafty ability to get shots off in traffic as well as drop dimes to open teammates.     Charles came off the bench and made an immediate impact with her shooting and offensive aggressiveness. She used her physical style to get to the line and also was hitting shots from the perimeter. Sade finished with a double double and was the difference in the game.     Jones showed her usual poised all around game on both ends of the court. She got her mid-range shot which she loves so much and was effective with it. On defense she played the passing lanes well and got multiple deflections and steals.     Sanford did the little things that senior leaders do. She played very good defense, collecting five steals and numerous deflections. On offense she played a steady floor game and got her teammates the ball in the right spots.     Jones naturally more of a wing did a solid job of trying to defend the opposing teams post players. When the opportunity presented itself, she got out and showed why she is among the most improved players in the state. Her length and improved offense make her an intriguing long-term prospect.
