Y.C. Winborn Classic at Rock Hill: Hoop State Standouts

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>As the holiday season draws ever closer, this also means that the basketball schedule ramps up big time with midterm exams having come and gone.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A large number of schools host midseason tournaments around the latter half of December. One of those schools is Rock Hill – which plays in the 5A Division 1 ranks. The Y.C. Winborn Showcase is hosted every year at the home court of the Bearcats and welcomes a few of the premier teams from both South and North Carolina.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We at Prep Girls Hoops also made the journey to Rock Hill for the first day of games. The Cougars had a rough time at the SCHSL 5A Division 1 Rock Hill office but Moore still greatly helped her team's efforts with an eight-point outing. Moore is listed at 5-foot-11 on the Cougars roster which can give her a height advantage over many a peer four or five in the frontcourt. Moore will also find plenty of time as a wing and understands that playing in the interior means drawing contact that can place her at the free throw line. Her Cougars were on the wrong end of a 49-32 decision to SCHSL 5A Division 1 host Rock Hill but she put forth a valiant effort as evidenced by her 10 points. Wallace stands at a tall 6-foot-3 – meaning one would expect her to primarily operate in close proximity to the rim. That height of a big with the long-range shooting accuracy of a two guard will always be a dangerous combination. Moore concluded her day with 10 points for Chambers. Moore is another one of the three sophomores on this year's Cougars squad. Height is one of the reasons why Chambers is such a tough out and Moore provides plenty of it at 6-foot-3. The fancy footwork and impressive post moves she presents also make her tough to game plan for. Stitt's Lions may have been on the wrong end of the 54-49 decision to the Vikings but the 12 points of Stitt gave Spartanburg a massive scare. West Charlotte made four 3-pointers for Thursday's matchup. Stitt displayed her long-range shooting prowess by connecting on a pair of those triples. The team captain for this year's 8A West Charlotte team, Grier is one of seven seniors that is part of the school's 2026 graduating class. A hard-fought contest between the Lions and SCHSL 5A Division 1 Spartanburg resulted in a Vikings win but as Grier's eight points displayed, Spartanburg was given all it can handle thanks to West Charlotte. One would expect someone who is 5-foot-10 to give a team minutes from the frontcourt but she can also play as a guard. Grimes is that for West Charlotte – one of the premier teams in the newly created 8A classification. Her team's contest against 5A Division 1 Spartanburg may have resulted in a narrow Vikings win, but she tallied 10 points which had her team in a position to win – especially in the second half when she was one of the catalysts behind a come-from-behind bid. Along with giving the Lions an interior scoring presence, she also spearheads the team's rebounding efforts as the team's leading board-getter.
