A winter weather advisory blanketed the Hampton Roads area this weekend. However, the action inside the gyms told a very different story. As temperatures dropped, the level of girls basketball rose. With established prospects doing what they consistently do and emerging players forcing their way into the conversation. The weekend offered no shortage of high-level basketball across the 757.

Kellam (Virginia Beach) vs. First Colonial (Virginia Beach)

The Spain twins — Mia and Kate — decided to play a rousing game of “anything you can do, I can do better,” pacing Kellam to a dominant 73–21 victory over First Colonial.

[player_tooltip player_id='443368' first='Kate' last='Spain'] finished with 21 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals, consistently applying pressure and setting the tone offensively. Not to be outdone, [player_tooltip player_id='443367' first='Mia' last='Spain'] flirted with a triple-double, posting 18 points, 7 assists, 7 steals, and 2 rebounds, impacting the game on both ends of the floor.

What stood out most was not just the production, but the versatility, leadership, and unselfishness of both guards. Each showed the ability to thrive in any lineup combination, organizing the offense, creating for others, and elevating teammates. The result: 10 different Kellam players finding the bottom of the basket.

Versatility and IQ on the Wing

Senior wing Caroline Pinardi was equally impressive in her all-around performance. Pinardi showcased a quick first step, physical on-ball defense, and strong vision off the drive, consistently collapsing the defense and creating opportunities.

One of the night's most memorable moments came with Pinardi on the floor alongside her two younger sisters, Ava and Mia, when Caroline delivered a perfectly timed assist to Mia for an easy basket — a special sequence highlighting both family chemistry and high basketball IQ.

Pinardi is a long wing who combines a quick first step with impressive court vision. She stretches the floor with her three-point range, and defends with toughness. Pinardi embraces the dirty work — rebounding, rotating, and making the extra play that winning teams need.

After recently eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone, the 2027 guard continues to show the basketball IQ, feel, and skill set to develop into a next-level point guard. With pinpoint passing in the half court and in transition. Spain controls tempo and consistently finds ways to influence the game on both ends.

Fresh off a school-record 10-three-pointer outing. Kate has established herself as a pure shooter with multiple counters. She finishes through contact, shoots at a high level coming off screens. Is a dangerous spot-up option, and has the ability to create her own offense. Her versatility makes her a constant problem for opposing defenses.

Sometimes the basketball gods smile on you and hand you a gift. Saturday was one of those times.

Bad weather delayed the start of the junior varsity match up between Lake Taylor (Norfolk) and Kecoughtan (Hampton). That delay ended up being a blessing, giving me the unexpected opportunity to catch a glimpse into the future of Lake Taylor basketball. That future is [player_tooltip player_id='1686332' first='Jaylah' last='Kirkland'].

At this point, someone is probably asking, “If she's that good, why isn't she on varsity?” The answer is simple: Norfolk Public Schools does not allow eighth graders to play varsity sports — and Jaylah is only 13 years old.

Yet there she was, controlling the game, playing beyond her years, and making it very clear that it won't be long before her name is one people around the 757 know well.

Kirkland showcased beautiful passing, strong off-ball movement, and consistent shooting touch. All while operating as a composed floor general for the Lake Taylor JV girls. Playing well beyond her years, she dictated tempo, and made teammates better. Kirkland clearly separated herself from the competition. She has all the tools to step directly into a varsity point guard role as a freshman.

One of the emerging names in the 757 for the Class of 2030. Kirkland shows advanced discipline within offensive structure and a strong feel for controlling pace. She thrives without the ball, consistently finding space, and presenting match up problems with her blend of size, strength, and quickness. Already, she has posted a 40-point outing at just 13 years old on the JV level.

Cold weather and the chance of snow didn't stop these athletes from elevating their games and furthering their cases. As recruiting continues to heat up, girls basketball in the 757 keeps showing why this region deserves a dedicated spotlight
