William Fleming took on Woodgrove in the lone girls' game of the day at the Adam Ward Classic. I was eager to get my eyes on a superb William Fleming team, and they did not disappoint. Here are my takeaways from the game.

William Fleming's defense was dominant.

Woodgrove's offense is outstanding, and although they came into this game as the underdogs, I felt they could cause a lot of trouble for a high-level William Fleming squad. That didn't happen as WF cruised to a win, and you have to attribute a lot of that to WF's defense. They did an excellent job keeping Woodgrove in front of them and controlling the glass. Part of Woodgrove's lack of success was that they just missed a handful of good looks, but WF did make it tough on them. They forced a lot of turnovers, especially in the second half, which led to a high number of buckets.

The gap in athleticism between these teams was noticeable.

On both ends of the court, the gap in athleticism was noticeable in favor of William Fleming. On offense, their guards did a great job driving by Woodgrove defenders consistently. There were several plays on the glass where WF bigs leaped over Woodgrove players who were in good position. [player_tooltip player_id='409779' first='Amari' last='Worsham']'s mix of athleticism and length gave Woodgrove issues as well. I also felt like their athleticism was a big part in forcing Woodgrove turnovers and giving ball handlers trouble.

Woodgrove is a wildcard in the postseason.

I think Woodgrove's playstyle makes them a really interesting watch in the postseason. Woodgrove relies on shooting a lot, and when jumpshots aren't falling, they go really cold. You can say that about a lot of teams, but I think there is usually an extra element to other elite offenses that Woodgrove does not have. On the flip side, if Woodgrove is making shots, they can knock out some teams that have real state title potential. Woodgrove won a state title playing a similar style 2 seasons ago, but I felt at the time they had more shot creation than they have now. This is still an elite offensive team that would be a scary draw for a lot of teams, but I think you saw the downside of their offensive style today.

Tale of two halves, & Fleming was able to play their game.

This game was competitive in the first half, and Woodgrove had a lead in the middle of the second quarter. With that being said, it felt to me that William Fleming was dictating the game more. It was a lower-scoring first half, and it was pretty scrappy. WF was consistently getting to the rim, but they were missing a lot of shots in close. It felt like once they cleaned those things up, this game would turn in their favor. Woodgrove scored 13 second-half points, and a 6-point WF halftime lead ballooned to 30.

Additional Takeaways

[player_tooltip player_id='815658' first='Signae' last='Houston']
[player_tooltip player_id='815658' first='Signae' last='Houston'] was solid for William Fleming, especially in the second half. She hit a few jumpers and was great on defense. Signae handled the ball well and did it more and more as the game wore on.

[player_tooltip player_id='1357629' first='Mya' last='Bundick']
[player_tooltip player_id='1357629' first='Mya' last='Bundick'] was the only Woodgrove player I saw who was able to put pressure on the rim for Woodgrove. She had a few tough takes, and although she didn't have a big scoring game, she showed some nice flashes.

William Fleming took on Woodgrove in the lone girls' game of the day at the Adam Ward Classic. I was eager to get my eyes on a superb William Fleming team, and they did not disappoint. Here are my takeaways from the game.
