On the opening night of Districts, I like to follow the road less traveled in search of a gym featuring four teams that I haven't watched during the regular season. Ovid-Elsie was the perfect spot for me to stop by, as all four teams had at least nine wins coming into their matchups. This was my first time visiting the town of Ovid to see games at Ovid-Elsie High School. I loved the "Hoosier" aura of the gym, the playoff energy, the proximity of the stands to the court, and the friendliness of the people. To top it all off, a bag of popcorn only cost me $1, what a bargain!

Ovid-Elsie vs. Chesaning, District 94 Quarterfinal, Ovid-Elsie HS, March 2nd, 2026.

Ovid-Elsie defeated Chesaning 52-41 on the road in their previous meeting. After a fierce back-and-forth first quarter that ended in a narrow 14-11 lead for the Marauders, it looked like the game would come down to the wire. After Chesaning tied it up at 14 all early in the second, Ovid-Elsie tightened up defensively, then established a 27-17 lead at the half. A 16-6 run in the third quarter put the game away for good as Ovid-Elsie would go on to win 51-32. The win marks an important milestone for the program, as it is the Marauders' first postseason victory since 2023. Ovid-Elsie will face the second seed, #9 ranked Hemlock, in the semifinals. Here are the prospects from both teams who caught my attention during the game.

Savannah is a long, quick, and competitive wing-guard from Chesaning. She had a breakout performance at Swartz Creek Summer League in 2024 and looked solid with [program_tooltip program_id='713450' first='REAL' last=''] last summer. Savannah disrupted passing lanes with her length and made guards uncomfortable. She closed out quickly to block multiple shots on the perimeter and swiped the ball away clean to score a fast break layup. One of my favorite plays from the game was when Savannah swished a cold-blooded corner three with the student section screaming in her ear, then stared them down to make sure they saw it go in. Savannah demonstrated leadership by taking responsibility for an off-target pass. She zipped an entry pass through a sea of arms for an assist down low. Savannah absorbed hard contact on a determined drive, then converted the layup. She became Chesaning's single-season leader for steals, passing the previous record of 93. Savannah poured in eight points for the Indians, added four steals, and three blocks.

Chloe shifts into high gear when she handles the ball. She switched hands to beat full-court pressure, chased down offensive rebounds, and caused turnovers with her aggressive ball pressure. Chloe side-stepped a defender after a crossover dribble to score a Rondo-esque runner from the free throw line. She competes with a high motor, facilitates, and pushes the tempo. Chloe will be a guard to follow this spring with the Mystics.

It's not uncommon that the best defenders on a basketball court are also outstanding soccer players. As soon as I saw McKenzie sprinting sideline to sideline, switching to cut off multiple drives on the same possession, demonstrating textbook defensive footwork and IQ, diving on the ball to secure steals, and setting the standard for pace, I figured she had to be a great soccer player. McKenzie crashed the glass to score an offensive rebound put back, handled the ball with poise, and showed good form from beyond the arc. McKenzie led the team in steals with five and grabbed four rebounds. She will continue her soccer career at Alma following graduation.

Alyson stepped up in the biggest game of the season for Ovid-Elsie. She was crucial to putting the game out of reach, scoring 11 points in the third, while sinking eight of nine from the charity stripe. Alyson stared down the rim on the catch to freeze defenders, then accelerated downhill to cause fouls. She switched hands effectively, using shifty double-crossover moves to penetrate the defense and scored a tough, contested layup. Alyson swished three triples from different spots, including one from way downtown in the slot. She picked off passes, fired kick-out passes to open shooters, and pursued rebounds. Alyson led the team in scoring with 20 points and rebounding with seven.

Lydia was one of the best surprises of the day. Her verbal communication and fierce effort in the post energized Chesaning. Lydia worked hard to seal defenders in the paint, caught passes with soft hands, turned, and finished multiple layups off two feet through contact. She scored a strong and-one layup with her left, then completed the old-fashioned three-point play from the line. Lydia boxed out with a solid stance and jumped up to snatch rebounds at its highest point. She ran through passes to make contested catches and protected the ball by pivoting using high rips/pivots. Lydia never stopped playing hard or wanting to win the game, regardless of the score. She moved well without the ball, converted shots efficiently at the line, and scored a tough layup from a difficult angle through contact. Lydia led the Indians with 15 points and nine rebounds.

I've been wanting to watch Kendal play for quite some time. A point guard needs to have a high IQ, and Kendal definitely checks that box. She knows exactly where the ball needs to go and verbally directs teammates on the offensive end. Kendal switches hands seamlessly and maintains control using effective pocket dribbles. She protected the ball, putting defenders in jail with her dribble, and turned the corner quickly, taking DHOs straight to the rim. Kendal split defenders and distributed great dump-off passes once the help side defenders arrived. She moved well off the ball, scoring a layup off a flext cut and drove by the defense with a burst from the corner to score another layup. Kendal buried a smooth step-back corner three and two more up top. She moved her feet quickly on defense to mitigate drives and deflect the ball away. Kendal anticipated passes from the gap to snag steals and turned in a complete effort. She poured in 16 points, dished out four assists, and secured four rebounds in the win for Ovid-Elsie.
